What Do You Want From KillTheCan.org?
What, exactly, do you want out of KTC? What makes the prospect of KTC different than other approaches you might have tried on previous quit attempts?
Is it the fact that it’s nic-free, unlike those worthless patches or nic mints you found yourself using to get by?
Is it that there are other folks that are quitting right there along with you, rather than white knuckling it on your own?
Is it because most of the folks seem to get what nicotine addiction is really like, unlike your wife/gf/life partner? People that can sympathize with the process of addiction recovery, but also know addict-speak when they hear it?
Is it being able to read about the trials and tribulations of other quitters? Maybe contribute your own close calls and success stories?
Is it being able to send a quick text to a fellow quit brother, just to check in and see how he’s doing or see if he needs an assist posting roll?
Is it knowing that if need be you can send a quick text to a fellow quit brother when you’re going through a rough patch and your resolve might be waning?
Maybe it’s just me, but those are all of the things I want and get out of KTC. I’ve tried quitting on my own and failed. Numerous times. I’ve tried to explain to my wife what this process is like and why I need extra support and accountability. She gets that I need it, but she doesn’t really get why. I’ve tried to quit under the blanket of 100% support at any and all costs. My quit quickly went into auto-pilot and my inevitable cave happened within a blink of an eye four and a half years later.
The tone and the tenor of KTC isn’t for everyone. I get that. Some folks are truly turned off by our individual and collective approach.
Fortunately for them, there are other sites and resources available to them that will better cater to their sensibilities. Absolutely no shame in that, and I will happily PM anyone a list of alternatives to try elsewhere.
What Do You Want?
But, before you decide to walk out that door, you need to ask yourself what your ultimate goal is here and what it’s worth for you to get there. Is the tone of KTC a turn-off because you are personally and deeply offended, or is it because the addict within you is really starting to squirm and get uncomfortable. Again, there is no shame in admitting either. If it’s the former, I’ll send you that list. If it’s the latter, well, that’s something we can work with.
- KTC is about making a promise each day that has a 24 hour shelf life.
- KTC is about taking absolute pride in making that promise and upholding it at all costs.
- KTC is about support in the form of pats on the ass when needed.
- KTC is about support in the form of smacks upside the head when needed.
- KTC is about surrounding yourselves and each other in a shield of accountability.
- KTC is about protecting that shield of accountability at all costs.
This isn’t an a la cart menu, unfortunately. You don’t get to pick and choose the parts that you want to uphold and then forgo the rest. You can try, but that’s not how we quit here. Quit with us, not in spite of us.
Before you get upset and decide to leave over being called out for missing roll or some other seemingly minor transgression, stop. Stop and ask yourself why some seemingly random stranger on the internet could possibly give a fuck about you and your quit; much less whether you’ve posted roll or not. If the answer isn’t even semi-apparent to you, then either KTC truly isn’t for you or this place hasn’t fully registered yet.
