Words of Wisdom

Vigilance is the Key

Quit Spit AZI am finding that quitting tobacco is unlike anything I have ever attempted. Some people think that a bad habit is a bad habit and you quit them all the same. I don’t think that’s true. Tobacco has a certain allure that is not present in anything else in life. Nicotine is the mistress who appears at night, the friend who calls at just the right time, and sometimes, it seems, the only thing we have to look forward to.

It is because nicotine is such a powerful foe that we as quitters must remain vigilant every day. After all, we are learning to live without something that has been a huge part of our lives for a very long time. For some of us, a regression is just a bad day or stressful moment away. Like so many things in life, the decision to do something is easy, the application of that decision is what can beat you down if you let it.

Vigilance means having a plan. Vigilance is your quit buddy, that piece of candy instead of a smoke or dip, or a quick walk around the office to clear your head. Vigilance is your defense against outside pressures, and sometimes, against your own weakness. Vigilance means not taking failure sitting down. Know what you are going to do when your mind takes you to that dark place and you feel like your quit is no longer important enough to fight for. Let someone know when you are struggling, don’t face it by yourself. Vigilance is asking for help.

Vigilance is the key.
