Save The Date – The National Smokeless and Spit Tobacco Summit
Last year, KillTheCan.org attended the 6th Annual National Smokeless & Spit Tobacco Summit which was held in Austin, Texas. In addition to the outstanding educational program that was put on by the show organizers, we had an absolutely tremendous time checking out the city of Austin and visiting with some fellow quitters. Since that time, I’ve had multiple inquiries if we’d be attending the next event, where it was, and how to attend.
I’m thrilled to announce that we finally have a date and location for the next Summit. The next summit will be held August 6th through August 8th, 2013 on the campus of The University of Montana in Missoula, Montana. I can’t speak for KillTheCan.org as an organization at this point, but I can tell you that ol Chewie will be there ready to take in the sites and sounds of the Summit. I met some great folks last time and learned quite a bit about Big Tobacco and how just how dirty they fight. If I’m to continue this fight I need all the ammo I can get.
Not only that, but I’ve never been to Montana so that’s another state I can cross off my list 😉
According to the Summit website located at www.smokelesstobaccosummit.com here’s a list of those who should attend:
- Local, state and federal tobacco prevention and control administrators
- Tobacco program staff
- Public health educators and policy professionals
- Health care professionals and providers including physicians, nurses and clinic managers
- Tobacco treatment specialists
- Scientists
- Dentists, dental hygienists and dental assistants
- Higher education staff
- Students
- School and youth-serving agencies and youth advocates
I’d also like to add “quitters” to that list. I was absolutely STUNNED at the last Summit how few actual users (or in our case former users) were actually in attendance. It’s one thing to “fight the good fight” against Big Tobacco… and believe me, there are plenty of folks there who we’re doing just that. But it’s another thing entirely be able to speak from EXPERIENCE when it comes to quitting. That’s what we bring. Our forums are up over 12,000 members now. I’d like to think it’s safe to say that we know a thing or two about quitting dip.
We were a sponsor for the 6th Summit, and if I’m being honest I hope that we will be again. But as I said before, I wouldn’t miss it for the world. So even if we’re not a sponsor, you can rest assured that KillTheCan.org will be represented at the 7th Summit!
So mark your calendar for August of 2013. Are you going to join me?!?
Outstanding news. I know it’s still some time off but you should consider putting up a specific donation link on the KTC site for those who wish to make us a sponsor again. Would be honored to contribute to the cause.
I could not believe the response last go around. It took on a life od it’s own and if I recall correctly, it was KTC member driven.
