Black Buffalo Long Cut Review – Mint and Wintergreen
Back in March I reviewed a product that I didn’t think I’d ever get to – Black Buffalo Pouches. You can read that full review here. I was finally able to review a Black Buffalo product because they came out with nicotine and tobacco free product. Well, they were pretty damn awesome and I’m thrilled to be back with another product offering. Introducing Black Buffalo ZERO NICOTINE and ZERO TOBACCO Long Cut! https://www.blackbuffalo.com/
PLEASE NOTE: This review ONLY pertains to the NICOTINE FREE (100% Ritual) version of these products. I have not, and will not try the versions of this product that contain nicotine.
Black Buffalo Long Cut Initial Thoughts
It’s been quite some time since I’ve reviewed a product here on the site that WASN’T a pouch. (last time I reviewed a non-pouch product was back in January). At this point in my quit I’ll be honest when I say that I prefer pouches, even after nearly 15 years quit there’s still something about popping in a big ol chew that will ‘scratch that itch’ better than a pouch will.
First impressions were that these might be a little on the dry side but they packed REALLY well. That’s not to say the product is dry… not at all. Just that there are other products out there that are moister upon opening.
Where these products really stand out is in the cut. This is truly a long cut product which are really few and far between on the market. The guys at Black Buffalo really nailed the cut here. I find that there are typically two types of people that use fake dip:
- People who are looking for something SUPER close to their previous chew of choice or
- People that are looking for something that tastes good, even if it’s very different than their brand of choice
Black Buffalo NAILS the realness factor here if you were a Wintergreen or Mint user. I have to be honest… I’ve been quit long enough that I can’t quite remember what my ‘beloved’ Kodiak tasted like. I’ll never forget the smell, but through the years I’ve lost the memory of it’s taste. That said, I can’t tell you this tastes exactly like that but it’s a VERY real version of a long cut chew.
Black Buffalo comes in a high quality round, plastic tin. The product contains 1.2 oz of product and the packaging is VERY clear that this is the tobacco free and nicotine free variety. I would have liked to have seen a ‘best by’ date printed but that’s a slight ding.
Black Buffalo 100% Ritual Long Cut Mint and Wintergreen
When I wasn’t Kodiak Wintergreen guy I was a Skoal Mint guy. This is a very ‘real’ version of a long cut Mint product that I think Skoal Mint users would appreciate. TONS of dark brown saliva with both the Wintergreen and Mint varieties.
Both flavors here are really strong and the smells are amazing when you pop open the can. I don’t get the ‘shiver’ that I did when I popped open my Kodiak but that’s a good thing 😉 I left both of these in for a good 20 minutes and didn’t have much diminishing of flavor at all. This is a long lasting chew that I’d DEFINITELY recommend.
Black Buffalo Long Cut Mint and Wintergreen Final Thoughts
Black Buffalo Zero Nicotine Zero Tobacco Long Cut is available on their website at https://blackbuffalo.com/. These are quite simply AMAZING products if you’re looking for something that feels like the real thing. These may be the closest to a ‘long cut’ that I’ve ever run across in the alternative market. Taste is 100% subjective so your mileage may vary but if I were raking these I’d put Wintergreen slightly above Mint… again, I was a Kodiak Wintergreen guy. As I said, I would have liked to have seen a ‘best by’ date on the package but that’s a small complaint as these are REALLY good substitute products for those quitters looking for something REALLY close to the real thing.
Authors Note: I realize there are some people that think fake dip that’s close to the real thing is a bad thing. I personally don’t subscribe to that theory, but I can understand it. If you’re worried about something that’s close leading you back tot eh can I’d stay away from these as they’re spot on.
If you were a Wintergreen or Mint user I’d urge you to give these a try. I don’t think I’ll be disappointed. Strong recommend.
Special thanks to the folks at Black Buffalo for providing me samples to try and review. In addition to their website, you can also find them on social at Facebook, Twitter @blackbuffaloinc or Instagram. Give them a like and a follow and tell em KillTheCan.org sent you!

I came across a study that black Buffalo does still contain things like arsenic, formaldehyde. Disappointing
That is disappointing. Please link to the study. I’d like to check it out. That doesn’t seem correct.
Seemingly a lot of nasty stuff still in it. Disappointed because I’ve been using for a while. https://www.coresta.org/sites/default/files/abstracts/2021_TSRC62_Misra.pdf
Thanks for sharing. Two notes I’d point out:
1) This study appears to reference the versions of Black Buffalo that contain nicotine. I’ve never tried those products. The review we’re commenting on are explicitly the 100% NICOTINE FREE variety of their products.
2) In the conclusion section, it says this:
In summary, BLACK BUFFALO LONG CUT and POUCHES products emulate Smokeless Tobacco (SLT) products in several respects—including nicotine satisfaction—but without toxicities and significantly reduced levels of HPHCs (including no B[a]P or NNN) compared to SLT product.
AGAIN – THIS IS IN REFERENCE TO THEIR PRODUCTS THAT CONTAIN NICOTINE – NOT THE PRODUCTS THAT I’VE REVIEWED.
After about two weeks i have stopped chewing that’s how bad this product is
Hmm… that’s interesting. I absolutely love it. What didn’t you like about it?
Black buffaloe was nasty to me. Reviewer mentioned the product is dry and he’s right. It has the texture of dried up moss. Disgusting. Might be okay for others but I prefer my dip be moist
For anyone who has purchased Black Buffalo, can you let me know how this package arrives in the mail? Is their logo or references to “tobacco” or “tobacco free” printed all over it? Is it obvious what the product is inside?
I reached out to BB and heard this from the owner:
“Our mailers don’t reference either – pretty ambiguous just Black Buffalo Inc.”
Just got my Black Buffalo Mint Ling Cut. I agree that the cut and texture is fantastic. While it definitely is a long cut, to me it seems the strands are a bit on the thin side – but that could be that I’ve gotten used to Amarillo snuff and can’t exactly remember Skoal long cut. But the strands are a good texture – people that complain about Smokey Mtn texture won’t have that complaint here.
I have used mint and wintergreen tobacco. I prefer mint over wintergreen. But I didn’t use either very much. I was a cherry and straight guy mostly. I’m not too picky about mint – it’s minty. But I will say that this is a very strong mint flavor. The flavor lasts a long time. I’m not getting any weird background flavors like a lot of the fakes have. There is also a nice burn to it. I can’t tell if they add pepper or if it’s just from the mint, but I like it.
I’ve tried many of the alternative dips and so far this is my favorite mint. I only wish they made a long cut Nicotine free version of their straight flavor. Right now they only have mint or wintergreen long cut in nicotine free.
Also, I like that the can has a metal lid with raised lettering. Really not a big deal, but it just shows that they take pride in their product. It makes it seem more authentic.
I agree with your review! They’ve done a great job. I would point out though, They should put more significance into the labeling so that the “Zero” variety is not to be confused with the Nicotine version. The label and packaging are almost identical. I bought a 5pk of Mint and a 5pk of Wintergreen. However when they arrived the Wintergreen wasn’t “Zero”. It hurt, but I threw it in the trash just so I wasn’t tempted. I assume its no different than Copenhagen and its labeling, however, different goal.
Thanks for the kind words on my review Brian. Sorry you got the wrong version in your order. In the future I’d suggest you reach out to BB to see if they’d send you new product – their customer service has been awesome to work with in the past for me.
Waiting for them to release a Straight nicotine free long-cut.
So far Smokey Mountain straight is the best I’ve found for straight and it’s only ok. Have you found any good No nicotine straight products?
This article is around ‘Cope’ as opposed to ‘Straight’ but it may give you some insights: https://www.killthecan.org/what-is-the-best-alternative-to-copenhagen/
