Matthewb51’s Accountability HOF Speech
Accountability: the quality or state of being accountable; especially: an obligation or willingness to accept responsibility or to account for one’s actions.
That sums up my thought on being a successful quitter. Holding yourself accountable. Being obligated to your family and friends and willing to take your life back from something that had no stock in you whatsoever. If your face rots off or you die, it’s on to the next poor schlub thats a little hooked as she digs her claws in deeper and deeper. Like a lot of other quitters, I started using this awful shit because of buddies that used it around me. Now thats not a good reason to place blame at all and if I had been stronger in the beginning, I would have never let anyone talk me into it. I started chewing when I was 20 and I consider myself fortunate enough to have made it where I am today after using this shit for just over 9 years. I can’t imagine trying to quit after doing this for 20-30 years like some of you out there. I owe my quit to this website. I also owe it to the guys on here who reached out to me early and often, held me accountable by inviting me to post in more than one group, and lastly to my wife who supported me the whole way and continues to do so this day. My quit was for me first, but secondly for her and my family and friends. The thought of not being around for them because of my selfishness scared the shit out of me. I couldn’t go out like that and I refuse to be a statistic. Gone are the days of lying about dipping, staying up late to get one more dip in for the night, hiding spitters because you’re a liar or embarrassed of your disgusting habit or worrying about when I could get that next lipper or can from. I owe myself and everyone else much better than that. There are far too many positive things to mention about this site and I have no doubt that it has saved many a quitter, including myself. I know that I may forget some, but I would like to thank TSmith, AGlawyer, Sportsfan and EvilWon for reaching out to me early and inviting me to post with them. You guys helped more than you know and I thank you for that. The biggest thing that I take with me is accountability. Take responsibility for yourself, your loved ones and your friends. Be obligated to be a better version of yourself. Hold yourself accountable. I know I will continue to do so and I challenge you to do the same.
