Ron Cross HOF Speech – No Cure But a Huge Daily Victory
How does someone really understand addiction if they have never been addicted to anything in their entire life?
First, thank you to my wife for her understanding and support during the past 15 years while I was going through one of the most difficult challenges in my life. That challenge being quit from nicotine. I stopped using nicotine many times over the past 15 years of marriage. Most of the time, I stopped for about 20 minutes and then I put another chew in. She was there every step of the way, enduring the lies and disappointment that I brought constantly. She showed me daily support and understanding even though she had never used nicotine in her life. Also, thanks to my son who is twelve years old for putting up with my being grouchy the past 100 days.
Second, thank you to my DEC 13 quit group for being there every day over the past 100 days. Without you, I would still be a slave to nicotine. I want to mention Gdub, and dabean22 (for being the first to reach out) and Ranger 520 who from early in the beginning was a great source of support. Thank you to Jdub for the friendship you have offered me. Thanks to doc2quit4good, bafloyd, mattyf118 for working the spreadsheet. Thanks to sportsfan and jbradley, for their feverish support. Thanks to Razd and OIB who were the Vets that in the beginning showed us how things work. Thank you to everyone who posts and participates on KTC. You really are doing God’s work by helping others.
I am now 100 days nicotine free. One thing that I do know is that I am an addict. I also know that I will be an addict for the rest of my life. I have come to understand that there is no cure but only a huge victory on each and every day that I remain nicotine free. One day at a time. Tomorrow will take care of itself.
