BaccOff Review
BaccOff was originally introduced in the early 1990’s as a tobacco free snuff that emulates real tobacco in taste and texture. Even before I was quit (nearly 6 years ago for those keeping track) I’d heard of BaccOff and their corresponding Dip Stop program. In an effort to provide as much information as possible to the quitters out there, I reached out to BaccOff and got some samples to try.
I wanted to add a note here about the Dip Stop Program. I did NOT sample this particular product. I’m already quit so I would be an appropriate tester. The program includes a manual, a CD and a 30-40 day supply of their herbal drops which are supposed to ease withdrawal symptoms. Full details on the Dip Stop Program can be found here: baccoff.com/dip-stop-quit-dip-program If you’ve used this product please let me know what you thought. Dip Stop also offers the Stop Smoking In Three Days program. Not being a smoker, I did not try this product either.
So… now that I’ve told you want I didn’t try, let’s get into the stuff that I DID try shall we?
Baccoff Initial Impressions
Plastic tins contain either 1.0 or 1.2 oz of product or 20 pouches. A few of the cans I received said, “New! Packs Better!” on them. I’m not sure how the product packed before the “update” but I have to say this gives a nice pack. Every flavor had a nice smell upon opening and all were moist enough for my liking.
BaccOff Wintergreen – Great smell upon opening the can. At first glance, the product was nice and moist and gave a good rush of flavor when I first popped in my chew. This version of wintergreen wasn’t quite as “intense” as I’d like but it’s got a nice mild flavor. Good spitability with a good color. It’s not the darkest I’ve sampled, but certainly not the lightest either. This one was a bit “harsh” and didn’t last quite as long as I’d like. When I took it out after about 15 or 20 minutes, I’d gotten just about everything I could out of it as I tend to really “work” my chews. As such, it came out pretty dry which isn’t necessarily a bad thing. I’d consider this a “sweet” version of wintergreen. This can contained 1.0 oz of product. Off to a decent start!
At this point, I took a closer look at the product I’d gotten and I realized that I had 4 versions of wintergreen products: Regular, Extra, Pouches & Energized. I wasn’t quite sure what the differences between the versions were, so I reached out to Dip Stop founder Russell to see just what I had. Here’s his breakdown:
- Wintergreen – Made from peppermint leaves. This was our original product developed in 1992.
- Extra – Made from tea leaves. Developed in 1994 and was originally thought to replace the original wintergreen. Customer demand required the continuation of the Wintergreen product.
- Pouches – Wintergreen product in pouches.
- Energized – Essentially this is Extra Wintergreen with the equivalent of 2 Red Bulls per can.
BaccOff Extra Wintergreen – This has more of a Skoal Wintergreen smell to it. It’s much moister than the previous version. It’s got a great flavor but is still sweet than I prefer (I was a Kodiak guy). This one too has great spitability and not nearly as “harsh” as the Wintergreen. I’d describe is as a much softer chew. Good longevity. This is a very nice wintergreen alternative. I preferred this one over the regular version. This can contained 1.2 oz of product.
BaccOff Wintergreen Pouches – Good flavor here with a nice smell upon opening. I’d expected a similar smell to one of the previous flavors but I was surprised to get something a bit different. I’m a big pouch guy these days just due to the convenience factor. I found that one pouch just wasn’t enough so I popped in another. These have a very “warm” flavor to them. I’d equate it to what I remember Red Man Golden Blend being. It’s a bit weird, but very comforting. This wasn’t a very long chew, but I really enjoyed it. This can contained 20 pouches.
BaccOff Energized Wintergreen – I was worried about trying one of these energy dips at night time. I drink enough coffee during the day to keep a small office caffeinated. That said, I’ve never been one to be cautious, so I went for it anyway. Once again, a great smell when opening and an awesome flavor when I popped it in. This is by far the moistest of the wintergreen varieties. This continues the “sweet” wintergreen flavor tones. I keep hearkening back to Skoal or Silver Creek. I’d say this is hands down the best of the wintergreen varieties. I didn’t notice much of an “energy boost” but to be fair, I never do with these energy products. Great chew. This can contained 1.2 oz of product.
BaccOff Mint – Next up on my list was Mint which was always a close second to me to my fav Wintergreen. To me, the quintessential “mint” dip was always Skoal Mint. This is close to that flavor wise, but a bit “sweeter”. I got a nice bold flavor and it was very moist. More so than Wintergreen above, but not quite as much as Energized. As with the others this has good longevity and spitability. This is a nice alternative and unless you’re looking for spot on Skoal Mint (which this is still pretty close) you’ll be happy. Can contained 1.0 oz of product.
BaccOff Straight – When it comes to dip (or alternatives), the Straight flavors are always kind of scary to me. For me they’re normally either too sweet or too “harsh”. Luckily this was neither. It reminds me quite a bit of Skoal Straight. That said, you’ll have to keep in mind that I was a wintergreen guy, so I may not be the best judge of straight flavors. Once again this has a good longevity and produces some good spit. I’d say so far this is my least favorite of the bunch. Can contained 1.2 oz of product.
BaccOff Straight Pouches – Remember above where I was afraid of a straight flavor that was too sweet? This is it. The taste here and specifically the smell reminds me of walking into a cigar / tobacco shop with that warm / sweet smell. I started with 2 pouches and that wasn’t quite enough flavor for me. I popped in a third and that one did the trick. This product wasn’t super moist, but these days, I’ll give up some moist for the convenience that pouches give me. Too sweet for my liking. Can contained 20 pouches.
BaccOff Energized Straight – Good to end on a high note! This one isn’t as sweet as the pouches which is a very good thing. It’s moister than the straight which is good, and seeing as the Wintergreen Energized was the moistest of the bunch, I suppose it makes sense. This is by far the best of the bunch when it comes to the straights. Kept this one in for a nice long time with little flavor degradation. A good chew. Can contained 1.2 oz of product.
The Pros
- Price – $2.45 for single cans with additional price breaks for volume purchases.
- Good longevity and spitability across the board.
- Both Energized varieties were outstanding. Exactly what I look for in an alternative.
The Cons
- All flavors were on the “sweet” side for me. This one’s a personal preference so for some they may love it.
- Pouches weren’t what I’d hoped for. A bit too dry and I needed 2-3 to really get the robust flavor I was hoping for.
Overall
Overall, I was very happy with BaccOff. There were certainly flavors that I preferred over others, but that’s nothing more than a personal preference issue. I’m don’t use many smokeless alternatives these days, but when I do (other than when I’m doing a review) I tend to lean toward the pouches just for ease of use and cleanup. The “energized” versions of the product were the moistest of the bunch which I really enjoyed. I’d like to offer a special thanks to Russell Ralston for creating the product and to Mike Harris for providing me samples to try and review. big fan of the “energized” wintergreen and the mocha flavor. not a fan of the xtra wintergreen, fine cutt straight, or the energized straight. my two cents 🙂
Where do I get it

A few months ago I decided I was going to try to quit, again. It’s been many years since I’ve looked into the fake dip. I was quite surprised at all the options out there. I ordered a 10 or 12 pack (whichever they sell on their site)of the Bacc-Off Energized Wintergreen. I dip Grizzly Wintergreen longcut, so I thought this would be the best option.
I was excited to get the package in and I tried it straight off. I’ve been dipping since 1993 and was eager to quit. I figured I’d try and ride the momentum. As for the review; the taste was decent, but I thought the product itself was a little chunky and didn’t pack very good. I also had a few floaters getting stuck in my throat and in my teeth. It’s not a bad alternative, but I don’t think Bacc-Off is for me.
I just found this website today and really liked the fact that there are real reviews of the fake stuff. I’m hoping to try a few of the other ones, maybe they’ll be the one for me. If anybody would like to try the Bacc-Off, I have about 8-10 cans left over. I’m not sure how much it would cost to ship, but I’m not totally against mailing a can. Or, if anybody lives near Clayton, NC, just shoot me an email (eich09@yahoo.com)
