Day 376!!! Just realized today that I forgot my 1 yr. Dip free. Can’t say its always been easy. Honestly I still feel that urge to go buy a tin. I still try to avoid long drives, sporting events, large groups of people, and drinking more that 2 or 3 “beverages” in a day. Good luck brothers, no road worth traveling doesn’t have a few bumps..

Hey guys, all your comments and support for eachother is really wonderful to see. Started chewing at 15 when I started playing major-junior hockey, I’m 22 now, and after a can-a-day for about 3 years, I’m getting ready to get off the stuff. Taking a dip was the worst decision of my life. Making a quit date (my first true attempt to quit) might be the best decision of my life. I made this decision after realizing how madly in love I am with my girlfriend of three years. It dawned upon me one day how devastated I would be without her in my life. I’ve realized the negative effects of chewing and it came to my mind she probably would be equally devastated without me, and that’s not fair to do to her. I have the world of support with me (from her and this forum) and I ask for all your well-wishes and good luck as I embark on this journey. I wish you all the best of luck. Lets get this stuff the fuck out of our mouths. Day 1 coming 11/12/14 (my girlfriends birthday, one of my many gifts to her)
With best regards,
Connor.

Reed , like chewie says, these things are common, happens to all of us. Don’t give up, it is just your body reacting to the absence of the thousands of elements being kicked out of your body. i don’t know if you drink, but it is kind of like that, the alcohol poisoning gets metabolized within a day, but nicotine and other things that are in the dip, well, that takes a little while longer. No biggie though, its gotta be done, pretty soon you’ll see the results. hang in there.

Two weeks and about one day dip free. Happy to say I’m still doing great as far as cravings go. I have had some problems with anxiety but that has little to nothing to do with the nic. It’s just something I’ve had to deal with for some time now. But otherwise these last few weeks have been excellent and my only regret is that I couldn’t find this strength years ago.

Hey guys, I live in Georgia & dip is everywhere around me. I’ve switched from various Skoal fruity flavors to mainly Copenhagen southern cut. I started dipping at 19, now I’m 23 & the heartburn & stomach pains are too intense to ignore. I dipped wintergreen smokey mountain for a few months back in the Spring, I’m gonna try that again. Wish me luck

6 days without a pinch. Never thought id say that. 3rd day was killer so the past days seem great by comparison. Any idea of how long it takes to ‘forget about’ putting one in? My schedule is the same almost everyday so certain times a day are a nightmare to combat since I’ve thrown a pinch in at those times for the past 10 years. How long until that part goes away? Haha…

I am day 82, I still think about a dip. What has changed is the “craves” are not as often, yet , although not as often, they seem to be powerful.

At my stage, when I have a crave, I have my own tools to deal with it.
1) use fake stuff. Smokey mountain
2)post here
3)read other vets posting
4) I can now identify the crave and know it will be gone within 3 minutes, so I ignore it as much as I can
5) I want to quit, so I am very disciplined on keeping my quit
6) use sunflower seeds
7) I ate a to. Of carrots

I know guys here that are over 100 days, and at times still have craves, get past day 20, after your fog, and things will get a bit easier

Keep posting!!

Hey guys, new to the site. Day 2 of quitting and for some reason I feel really good. I don’t have any of the typical symptoms. I do find myself just thinking about it at times but for whatever reason I’m able to talk myself out of it unlike the last time I tried to quit. The hardest part for me honestly is the boredom after work, on breaks at work, driving around, or free time, etc. What did most of you guys do to ease that and does it get better?

Rick, Deepy, thank you guys for your responses. It’s been ten days since I first started quitting. Once during the second day my cravings were so bad that I ran my ring finger around a leftover can to get any tobacco residue into my system. I was dip-free again until the 29th when I got wasted, wrote that post, and did the same thing.

My problem now is not the dip. Even though I’ve fallen off the wagon twice, regardless of how little the amounts were, I have, like almost all of us here, needed to replace the habit with something. I would dip most around bed time, and now that I don’t have that ritual, about half of the ten days I’ve been quitting I have taken Xanax and drank booze. In fact, I’m sad to say I don’t even remember posting that plea for help and I feel badly for taking advantage of your guys’ help by making a drunken plea. Anyway I’m dipping less, but I’m developing this other habit that is not good either and definitely not safe. Please let me know what you guys think is a healthier way to handle this problem.

Thanks for your help guys. I enjoy reading encouraging things from everyone here.

Absolutely Jasper, you have come to the right place for help. Why don’t you start by telling us and yourself, what has made you quit? How long did you do it? how many cans a day? share a little bit about yourself. One thing I can offer you right away as a quitter myself, You have to really want to quit and not do it for anyone else.

Hang in there my man. Yes quitting is hard, very hard, we are addicts.
My fight started 81 days ago, and the first 3 days was hell, but once you get past three days, go for 4 days, before you know it you made it a week.

Some of us that’s post a lot have said, it takes a tough man to quit. And your a tough dude!

Day 100 may seem impossible and so far away, and really, it isn’t. My plan was make it a week, which in turn I was at a month, then two months.

Fight bro. U can do it,,, post as often as you can, you have a bunch if guys here rooting you on

No Problem,

We are addicted just like you, we struggled like hell also to start kicking the habit. Like you, we had our cave ins and all that, we substituded the habit with other dangerous things, that’s nothing new, the bottom line: We were just not ready.

At some point something came up powerful enough that scares the shit out of you or shames you so bad that makes you realize “It is time to quit”, but you are the only one that can make that decision, because you and only you will have to walk that walk. Sooner or later.

For Me, it was a Medical issue, nothing else would stop me, but that was able to stop me. You can wait until you have no choice but stop or you can make that decision on your own now.

i aint lecturing, just offering what I learned from all this shit had to go through.

On day 4. I dipped grizzly wintergreen for 5 years and this is by far the hardest thing I’ve done in a while. the cravings are some serious shit. just wanna throw a whole can in my mouth. i am doing it for my health, family and girlfriend. I am a college student athlete and stressed out most days with school and dip really helps my stress and anxiety. I’m hoping to overcome this nasty habit so I’m not reliant on dip anymore. I am doing it cold turkey so far and chewing gum every now and then. i may end up getting that snuff.

Officially one week three hours and ten minutes (give or take a few) completely nic free! I felt the fog and the weird depression the first few days but so far this whole experience has been great! I’m rediscovering all the things that I lost because I had to hide for an hour with a damn dip in my mouth. I feel incredibly fortunate to have things going so smoothly so far. Officially one day, one hour, and twenty minutes without any tobacco. So far I’ve been doing well. Of course it’s almost always right there in the back of my mind begging me to just run up town and get one more can. Just one last hurrah and then we can quit for real. But I’m committed this time. I haven’t made it this far since I started back up five years ago. I know I can do this. Thank you all for the stories and I wish you all the best as we kick this things ass together!

Day 34 for me. I bought two 10 packs of the nicotine gum (2 and 4mg respectively) when I picked my quit date to get through the difficult physical withdrawal part. I promised myself I wouldn’t buy any more of the gum in after running out. The last thing I wanted was to move my addiction from chew to the gum. I ran out after two days and kept my promise so I’m 32 days nicotine free today. Reading through the inspirational stories on this site helped me and still does today if I find myself having difficulty. Its good to have a place to come to where others relate. Keep the faith and good luck.

If you can do this, you can do anything you put your mind to it.
Think about it this way, You probably dipped for a couple of years, to reverse all the damage done will take a little while. Tough it out and Just do it one day at a time.

I am trying to make the decision to quit after almost 17 years of dipping. I started at a VERY young age and it has had a hold of me ever since. I am in the Army and my work gets pretty stressful at times which triggers my use. I started on Cope and swtiched to Grizzly when I was 18. I have tried to quit, but caved every time. I want to quit to save money and not expose my young kids to a bad habit. I just need some solid advice on how to kick it. I tried that herbal crap and couldnt stomach the taste, and then I tried pouches, but went right back to long cut straight. Please, any advice from some of you guys that have kicked the habit would be greatly appreciated.

Shad I am on day 83, by reading your post, it seems that you tried pretty much everything out there and nothing worked.

Here is how I did it. I joined a gym and worked my ass off everyday, I mean like a freaking beast to work off all that pent up energy I built during the day while at work.
It sucked like a MF I aint gonna lie.

The other thing I did, is carried a bottle of water, every time I had the urge, I would stuff my face with water, so all day I would be sucking water and pissing like a horse, you see the urge to piss distracts your brain from the tobacco craving.

Another thing I tried, and I know it sounds psycho, but it is taught in the marines, I would hit myself on my thigh to shift the pain? or count just start counting until the crave passes.
Try that and believe in yourself, think about your kids and get mad, i mean get mean mad at that GRIZZLY, tell it you aint gonna get me no more bitch. I aint going down no more!!!

Then come back here and let us know how you did…

Good Luck Shad.

I used to think about it 20 times a day, as time went by I thought about it less, now, for the most part I think about it every other day. I originally quit using Chantix, after a month and a half I felt I could do it without the pills, I was right, with very little will power Ive made it to day 326. Reading some of your comments have been very helpful.

First couple of days were a bitch. Twitchy, shaky, cranky…basically all the tell tale symptoms. Started using the Teaza pouches, and those for the most part have helped with the oral issues. However now, almost a month later, it’s like I’m going thru withdrawal again. Cloudy brain, mood swings. Craving a dip….Wondering if anyone had ever experienced this? I mean….it’s almost a month and now I feel like I did three days after I quite…..

Yo Tony, Don’t you worry about a thing, it happens to all of us. You are on the right track, keep it up. Seems to happen in a cycle, you feel good for a while then some days are crappy. Here is a link on this site that has a timeline of all symptoms that happens during a quit.

Good Luck.

My name is chris and im 31 days free after two cans a day for over 5 years. Its all mental buddy after watching my 6 yr old boy pack and tuck a pinch of jerky chew cause he wanted to be like me. I remember why I quit and why im stronger than a damp can of skoal. I miss it but no more than I miss having control over my life. You can do it man. Trust me its possible.

i decided to quit back in july after 11years of dipping from 13 to 24 years old it was getting boring an i felt like a slave to it and notice i was going through a can a day and had two white spots that hurt on my bottom lip i was like i gotta quit this dip! So they healed up, but i ordered Smokey Mountain, and then got Elicit and Triumph to help me in the nicotine dept without the chemicals . Every two weeks i got a can of tobacco and felt guilty that i caved in. But now after this Sunday i threw my Wolf Peach away after 4 dips. And going to try to be tobacco free. i still using nic but staying away from The Evil Tobacco with all those nasty chemicals, it has gave me body and mouth pain, Anxiety and stress i hate that cant even fall asleep fast. pray for me guys i’m conquering this beast and can’t wait for it to be a month and than a year!

Glad I found this website. I’ve only been dipping constantly for about 2 years now but it has really taken a toll on me. I typically go through 4 cans a week and that shit drains my wallet I am sick of it. I am 20 years old and my father is always dipping, he even makes me go buy it for him at the store. I find it difficult to quit when there are cans laying around my house all the time and I see him packing lips all day..it’s a terrible environment to quit in but so far it’s been about 48 hours since my last chew and that’s the longest I’ve gone in a while..these cravings are making me go crazy! Does the fact that I’ve only dipped for a few years make it any more easy to quit? Or will I experience the same discomfort and cravings as someone who has done it for decades?

Hey guys hows it going, I recently started trying to quit. I have chewed about 2 cans a day for six years and I am down to one lip a day in hope of quitting. Its just very hard because all of my roomates dip and its hard not to throw one in while were sitting around doing nothing. Any tips?
