Hey all, really glad I found the site. I’ve been thinking about quitting for a while now, but usually never make it past 3-5 days. I am currently 20 years old and I have only been dipping pouches for about 8 months. I’ve read a lot on this site lately…but I am just wondering if you guys have any tips to help with the first week. Anything would be much appreciated…I am feeling like this quit attempt might be the real thing!

JJ, for sure have to stay strong. When tempted think of all the damage to your body that you are avoiding by not giving in. Give yourself a pep talk “I’m Not a Slave to Anything!!!” . Think of the teeth that you will have when your older.

After 12 year’s of smoking I quit and started chewing. So for the past 8 year’s I’ve chewed and am currently on day 7 of quitting. This is one of the hardest things I’ve done but I know once I’m past it will be worth it. Any advice would be appreciated.

Day 1 is today , 28 years of Kodiak , I’m done , the only time I didn’t have a dip in was when I was eating other then that it was around the clock , even when I was sleeping, been gutting it for at least 15 years I can only image what my insides must look like. This wont be easy I know so I’m looking to see if anyone thinks a prescription or an over the counter aid is a good idea? Thanks for any input.

I have quite many times only to take that one dip because it is only one. Whether I was fishing, hunting, cutting firewood, or whatever I found that only one led right back down the path to addiction. This time I WILL DO IT!!!! I hate dipping but I can’t seem to get through the first day. There is always an excuse but this time I have to do it. I only use about a can every three days, sometimes it only lasts 2 days. Tonight I am throwing my last can in the trash after I flush the remaining dip down the crapper. I am glad I found this site because I know that I will need the support.

Here representing my boyfriend because while he has looked at the site, I don’t think he’d post himself. He is almost 18, has been dipping for 4 years and has tried to quit a couple of times before. Monday he swore to me he would throw away his can and never chew again, and I watched him do it.

Four days in now and it’s terrible. He can’t concentrate, is shaky, is hot tempered and has a constant pounding headache. He says he’s doing it more for me than himself, but I know he’s also wants it for him, because he’s told me. I think his want for it just outweighs his want to stop right now…he misses and hates it at the same time, he says.

He can’t think right now, and when he does, it’s about chew. The longest he’s ever gone without it is almost two weeks and he had a headache constantly and gave in. He’s so close to stopping now.

Please. Anyone. I need help. Suggestions to ease the pain, encouragement, an insight for the days to come…anything. Please.

Sincerely, Lexi and Tyler.

Go to the doctor and get Wellbutrin. I have tried Wellbrutrin and Chantix. They both worked for me. Chantix blocks the nicotine receptors in the brain and Wellbutrin works with the anxiety and depression.

Sorry for the repeated post…
The symptoms your boyfriend is having is the quit standard. Quitting is very difficult and it is the same way for everyone. As quitters we need to remember quitting is not an excuse to treat your family and friends like shit. As family members and friends it is your job to try to understand what the quitter is going thru. Please give some the quitter some leeway.
When I quit I challenged myself. I didn’t want anyone to notice that I had quit. I kept my attitude in check at all times and by ALL means no tobacco.
People did eventually notice I had quit because I stopped all the spitting and shit like that. They were amazed I didn’t wine about it the whole time and they didn’t notice either.

Thank you for all of your suggestions. Friday evening we got into a massive fight over it, and he’s started again… This is so difficult. I don’t want to make him miserable, because I know he enjoys it, but I also can’t stand to watch his hurt himself and put his health and future at risk. What should we do? Anyone’s help would be greatly appreciated..

Sincerely, Lexi & Tyler.

Day 96, while I still consider myself someone that’s trying to quit, I wasn’t mindful that one day I would be an Ex- chewer, strange to think that I’m a quitter and proud if it. I miss my best friend(that little can of Skoal) It’s still not easy but it did get better after day 75 when the cravings really diminished. Day 100 is a few days away. I’m not sure what real milestone it is but I’ve never gone this far before without having a pinch. It would be a complete waste of time, aggravation, anger, suffering and pride if I have a small pinch. Like a recovering alcoholic I can’t even have a sip or I’d be right back where I started

I started duct taping all of my cans after every pinch. I wrote “QUIT” in big letters on the duct tape. Every time I wanted a pinch, I would have to get up, grab a knife, cut through the duct tape and throw one in…It got annoying after a while and wasn’t worth me getting up to dig into the can anymore. Try it out. I was chewing for 4 years and almost 3 cans a week…Now I’m on day 32. Work is easier now. When a problem arrives at work, I don’t have to leave and have a pinch…I just work through it…

The only thing that will take away withdrawal problems is time. With time it will get much easier. I am in week 5 and I dipped all day at least 1.5 cans a day.
Tobacco addiction is substance abuse.

It is not easy to quit but is as simple as this:
1) Quitting is very difficult.
2) Quitting is very difficult for everyone. Your situation is not different.
3) You can quit.

There are not anymore bullshit reasons why you shouldn’t quit today. You want and need to do quit.!

Today is day one, after 6 years in the United States Marine Corps i had my first dip in Afghanistan, when i got a craving and the fact that booze was not an option. I was always against smoking because i was an athlete in High School, and the physical nature of the Corps, a buddy suggested a dip to me and i was all in, this was back in 2007, i got out and now im attempting to quit because a superior of mine that used to dip recently came down with the big C, he was not only my leader, but a father figure and mentor, im sure it will be a hard task but if i could survive some of the things i went through in the Corps i NEED to put my big boy pants on and do this thing!

Just wanted to check in. Folks I tried stopping every day for about 20 years. I failed and failed and went to bed licking my gums wondering if I had mouth cancer, as my kids slept in bed. No joke, this site helped me. It’s been almost two years and I can’t believe it. That said, it gets easy, then hard, then easy, them hard, especially during stressful times. F it. We need to man up and tackle this. If Macho green could call it quits and hit day 710 (yep, way beyond the HOF) you all can too. Just man the F up and next thing you know you’ll be sharing your story with others years out and not worrying about dumb shit like mouth cancer.

Hang in there man, it’s definitely doable…..everyday’s a victory. That sounds corny as hell, but it’s just the plain truth. Get as many days as you can between you and your 1st day quit. It gets easier. The satisfaction of ditching that little wicked can should propel you on past the first 3 days. Remember, it does get easier to the point of becoming a new norm., and that in itself is so sweet.

I started dip when I was 16. I will be 40 in August of this year. I suppose that I am lucky that I didn’t get mouth cancer. I dipped probably 8 hours a day. I quit cold turkey on Dec 8 2013. Day 1. Second time I’ve had a day one. Dipped for 9 years and quit cold turkey for 2 years. Thought to myself one day “one couldn’t hurt” and two years later here I am trying to quit again. Don’t do what I did. One does matter. Once you quit, stay there. The guilt of failure and my kids birthday coming up make me realize I can and need to do this and I will for good this time. I love the support site. Good luck everyone.

Day 106 here and I think it’s over for good! Just very infrequent and very short “moments”. I wouldn’t even call them “cravings” rather more a habitual thing as opposed to an addiction thing. Like I’m suppose to be doing something rather than I’m missing something. If that makes sense.
That’s 32 years of chewing 1 can Kodiak a day and Beechnut here and there between.

I swore after living with my dad and never understanding why he couldn’t quit when I begged him to that I’d never be with a man that chews. But it’s too late for that. I told him he can’t chew in my house but when he comes over for a couple hours to watch a movie and have dinner he begs me to just let him have one. Do you think if I had some nicotine gum and the fake stuff you all mentioned that would get him through that craving enough to wear I can stick to my guns without seeming like a total B word?

he’s gotta wanna quit, if he doesn’t wanna quit for you, then i’m not sure anything will convince him, i’m 112 days going strong, and feeling good. Until you stop and realize all the benefits you gain, its tough to convince someone. I kept count on my whiteboard in my house. Each day, I didn’t have one, I would add it to the whiteboard. After a couple days I felt good and I realized I never wanna have to erase that count, and write a day 1 back up there.

Steph-you have seen first hand the stranglehold nicotene holds on its victims. Gotta have the fix. He’s got to come to his own terms with quitting. Most of us long term users would find many things to quit for-our children, our wives, the dentist said so….but we always go back. We had to figure out that we need to quit for ourselves. Sometimes its easy, sometimes not. But in order to quit, you have to want it and want it bad. Because it is not easy.

You can keep your rules in your home, make him go outside to have his fix. Or stand your ground. either way, you pushing it on him will most likely have the opposite effect. No B word, unless you want to lay the law down harder than that such as my way or highway. But that might not work, because nic users are addicts and will lie/cheat/steal to get their fix. He will go ninja on you and say he’s quit, but not. Common.

Sorry I don’t have better news than this, you should point him here, let him see how the site works. As a user for 23 years and many failed attempts at quitting, this site and the tools/resources it provides has kept me quit for 3+ years. The best way to quit and stay quit in my opinion.

let me know how it goes !

He is hooked hard just like everybody else. its not even him wanting to do it its just his addiction urging him. Don’t be a complete b**ch to him because it isn’t him its a very powerful drug that you couldn’t possibly understand unless you have been on it for years. I’ve been off for 60 days after 20 years which doesn’t seem like much but i’ll tell you it took at least a month and a half to get to the point I didn’t crave it all day long every day. My ex wife was the same way and I hid it from her as much as I could. She even told me before we were married that it was sexy that I smoked when we were out partying, (I was 24-27 at that time). I’m 33 now and have had a girlfriend that smokes for the past 2 years. She tries to quit several times a year. I know exactly what she’s going through

I picked my username tobacco face because that’s what my ex wife would grab me by the throat and slap me upside the head and call me for what I was doing. She is a hospice social worker and said it would be sad when I was 70 something and couldn’t get up and beat someones ass to protect my family because I would be copd and helpless. I’m 33 now and still tough as hell so it might still be a long way off but she is right, She was and still is the best friend ive ever had. We have a son who is almost six. I’ve been coaching tball for the last 2 years and she is my scorekeeper and she’s remarried and has a child with her new man. (if that tells you anything) (If you and your ex don’t have a good relationship you didn’t have a good one to begin with) Anyways, tobacco is the easiest thing out there to get hooked on, only takes about a week and is available to buy at any store, but is by far the hardest thing to give up. What I have found after quitting is that nicotine is the ultimate pacifier: oh I’m stressed-get a dip or smoke, now I feel better. Its subliminal in your mind but that’s the sequence. Over and over and over for years. It keeps a person from focusing on what they really want to do, we remain locked in the short term forever. Its not the person doing it, its the drug.(And it is a drug, even if its legal) One thing that makes it seem so useless for me is that I have a buddy that is a straight up pothead. Many people on here can relate to this. He smokes pot daily, is very functional and even makes more money than I do in a years time. What is so pitiful is that he gets a very relaxing weed high going in the afternoon for probably the same amount of money that the rest of us dippers or smokers spend on our habit that does nothing other than fixing the same problem that it creates: withdrawal and relief. The ongoing saga. It never stops until we finally get fed up and decide to stop. “COLD TURKEY” After a couple months without it completely do you finally see what it is; the lamest habit you can have. No high no nothing. Oh sure a dip or a cigarette will make you feel warm and fuzzy for little bit but nothing more. That’s it, that’s all. It’s not worth anyones time. What would be nice would be to be the type of person who could have a smoke or dip after a night out with friends and leave it at that but that is a lot to ask.

Im on day 6 of my quit, I feel great. My only issue is that I cant fall asleep, I stay laying awake for hours, then when I do fall asleep its only for like 2 hours.

It took me about 2 weeks before I could get to sleep and when I finally could I slept like a rock! It was great not to stay up late trying to get in that last dip or getting up early so I could start the day with a dip. I’m on Day 420 quit after 30 years of dipping: stick with it. Only you can want it and only you can make it happen.

Day 798 here. I don’t miss it one bit though in the first few weeks I thought I would die. That’s just the inner addict talking – and the nic bitch. For me there’s no one dip; it’s being quit and clear about myself. And choosing that clarity with tobacco helps me have that clarity in my life overall. Stay quit @BIGDILG! you got this.

I am ready to give in to my crave because I am much happier when I have a dip in I joined this site looking for help and support but I feel that it is all bullshit and a waste of time to navigate this site. I know that this quit is tough and I am only in the middle of day 1 can’t get to groups can’t read half of the post on here so I feel I am wasting my time.

Hey Mike, i had a hard time navigating the site when i first found this site. But let me tell you, once you find what you are looking for it is an awesome support channel. I am on day 18 of my quit after using tobacco for over 30 years. But, i knew i was ready to quit, and the biopsy they pulled out of my mouth two days ago confirmed it. Look, this is something you have to do. We can only be there through the process. Believe me, we all have had a day 1. But if ypu are serious about the quit, then quit coming up with excuses to continue using. If you want to join a group, go into the forums section and click on quit groups. Find your quit date and click. Email one of the guys there and they will help you. Thats what i did and i havent had any problems.

just wanted to expand on your thank you to this sight. I am on day 60 (34 yrs of Cope) If it wasn’t for this sight I honestly don’t think i could have made it this far. I think i have gone through every misery that is possible when quitting. It is soooo nice to be able to come to this sight, read the posts and see that I am not dying, and that other people have gone through this too. Thank you soooo much!

I have been free 44 days. I use and go ahead and laugh but it works for me, woven mint flavored dental floss. It has to be WOVEN. Don’t miss the cope at all now.
