Killing The Can (and Big Tobacco) For 14 Years!

KTC 14 Year Anniversary

Yesterday we celebrated the 14th anniversary of helping people quit chewing tobacco! In these past 14 years we’ve been quitting together, we post roll daily and gain a freedom from nicotine and tobacco that for some people has been unheard of for decades.

As part of that celebration as we always do, we had a one-day, site-wide roll call where folks put their name on a line and promised to be quit from chewing tobacco for that day. The turnout this year was quite simply AMAZING.

I wanted to share these numbers with you for a couple of reasons. First, if you’re already a member of KillTheCan.org I want you to understand just how much good you’re doing helping others quit dipping. This addiction is one of the most difficult things we will ever tackle in our lifetime. Knowing that you’ve got friends and fellow quitters with you on that journey is incredibly comforting.

Second, if you’re NOT a current member of our accountability forums, I want to share these numbers to let you know that you’re NOT alone in your quest for freedom.  There are quite literally THOUSANDS of like-minded folks who know what you’re going through. I’m pretty confident in saying that we’re the largest smokeless-specific support forum on the web. What a powerful tool in your quit arsenal – USE IT!

Yesterday’s Roll Call Numbers:

  • 391,829 days of quit
  • 1,073.5 YEARS of quit

Special thanks to forum moderator chris2alaska who opened the closed the roll – he gave us this little factoid:

If we average 1.5 cans a day at $6.50 per can average per quitter, that is 587,744 cans of dip NOT chewed for a whopping $3,820,332.75 taken from big tobacco. In a single DAY!

I’m continue to be AWE of the community at KTC.  It never ceases to amaze me, and it’s days like yesterday that make me want to work even harder to make sure that it continues to flourish. As I sat down to write this post this morning, less than a week to Thanksgiving, I start to think about all that I’ve got to be thankful for… even in this shit sandwich that we call 2020.

I’m thankful for my family, friends and my health. I’m also eternally grateful for people that have helped me quit this terrible addiction. These are not my ‘internet friends’ – these are men and women who I talk to, interact with and have met face to face – well, prior to 2020 at least 😉

Our forum membership continues to grow. Our social media profiles (FacebookTwitter, Instagram and YouTube) continue their strong growth and engagement. Daily roll call posts continue on the blog and the conversation here on the site reaches thousands of people that have never heard of our forums.

Special thanks to the mod and admin team for their dedication and hard work – I’m honored to call them friends.

There are a lot of people that look to quit dipping cold turkey over the holidays. This is a great opportunity to get them into the KillTheCan.org family and set them up for huge success moving forward in their quit and into the new year. Cheers!

Hey Chewie, I came to you folks months ago with no success. Today I’m here and 5 months dip free. Read a few post and saw one I can relate to on alternative products. I quit cold turkey and didn’t give up alcohol which I’m sure would help. I still crave it and it does go away eventually. One post suggested the safe dip alternative products for those that actually just plain ol enjoy dipping and want a similar physical experience. Isn’t that just as bad since it is just something else to be dependent on? We should train our brains not to have that physical dependency, right?

Day 776 tomorrow 777
Howdy, A while back in one of my posts I did a similar calculation, but I did not have the exact numbers so I came up with a different number obviously, the important thing though is that Yes we are taking a big chunk off the bottom line from Big Tobacco companies.
It is showing because I went to a convenience store about 2 weeks ago and there was a guy in there talking to the customers in line, he came up to me and said if he could interest me in some free samples of Skoal. If it was me 2 years ago I would have taken a sample of each flavor and ask for a friend too, but I told the guy, I have been quit for 700+ days, his reaction was priceless, kind of surprised and annoyed, but proud and sincerely happy for me at the same time. He said congratulations!, I will not tempt you any longer and walked away. I said thanks, and also walked away. I wonder if these guys have always been there and I just never noticed or the Tobacco companies are actually finding ways to hook people, since they cannot longer advertise on TV or mags. Just a thought for the day.
Stay quit guys.
