Now THESE Are Some Warning Labels – Way To Go Mexico!!!
I recently returned from a trip to Cabo San Lucas with my wife to celebrate our 15th wedding anniversary. It was the first real vacation we’d been on since before our oldest son was born so it was really my first true dip free vacation in 7 years! I’m thrilled to report that not only did I personally not think about dip once during my vacation, I can’t really think of a time when I even SAW any smokeless products. Granted, I wasn’t really looking for these products, but when I was in gift shops, etc. I didn’t see any dip for sale. Pretty cool.
When we were at the airport waiting for our return flight, I had some time to kill so I took a spin through the duty free shop. While I didn’t see any smokeless products in their either, I did see something that got me pretty pumped up. I know there are warning labels on cigarettes and smokeless products here in the United States, but in Mexico (at least in the duty free shop) they take warning labels to a whole new level with messaging like this:
- Smoking kills
- Smoking seriously harms you and others around you
- Smoking causes aging of the skin
- Smoking can damage the sperm and decreases fertility
- Get help to stop smoking: consult your doctor or pharmacist
- Smoking is highly addictive, don’t start
- Smoking clogs the arteries and causes heart attacks and strokes
- Smoking contains benzene, nitrosamines, formaldehyde and hydrogen cyanide
- Protect children: don’t make them breathe your smoke
Sure, our products are labeled with similar messaging, but I don’t think I’ve ever seen it right out front like this. I’ve never been one to say all these products should be banned or taken off the market, but I’m happy to see these sorts of true warnings front and center.
What do you think? Are these kind of warning labels effective? Should smokeless products be labeled with similar “in your face” warnings?
