2010 HOF Speeches

So, You Can Actually Quit This Shit!

Hall of Fame KTC 2I find it ironic that I am writing this HOF speech given that I wasn’t even looking to quit dipping 100 days ago. Long story short is that my wife asked me when I was going to quit this shit and I had told her that: A. I didn’t think I could and B. I didn’t see a need to. I’d been to the dentist for the last three years for cleanings and other work and there had not been any mention of concern from him that I need to quit using. Afterall, I had been using the SHIT for 27 years. One would think that in that time if I were to get Oral Cancer, it would have already happened.

So, I happened onto Google, typed in “Quitting Smokeless Tobacco” and lo and behold the site KTC came up on my screen. My life hasn’t been the same since.

I read all the information and got the living shit scared out me. You mean to tell me that people actually do die from this stuff and those that do survive do have their faces all cut apart in order to get the cancer out of their mouths??? Really???

Then I read the Jenny and Tom Kern story, and I knew I did not have a choice.
It was time to grow up.
It was time to be a father to my kids.
It was time to realize that I wasn’t going to live forever.
It was time to realize that there are ways to dying that are much worse than others. It was time to realize that this shit can / will kill you and the last days of your life will absolutely positively SUCK!!

I use to do everything with this shit in my mouth. Now, I do everything without this shit in my mouth.

Many many thank you’s to everyone on this board. Like others have said, it is weird way to quit with a bunch of strangers. Having the common issue is the bond. Being able to share what you are feeling on day ## and have 6 replies come back saying “Yeah, I know the feeling. It will pass, just fight thru it” is what helped me the most. Having people willing to post for you when you don’t have internet access is awesome. Having people send PM’s to offer encouragement, offer their phone number, ask you how you are doing and feeling, and genuinely having a commitment to the same thing that you are committed to makes a HUGE difference.

Thank you so much for all that was done! I appreciate it very much!
