Some People Just Don’t ‘Get It’
Within the last 90 minutes, I’m on the sidelines of my son’s preseason football practice with other dads, some of whom I’ve known for the past 4-5 years as fellow parents /or coaches. This one dad, let’s call him ‘Mike’, notices me switching from sunflower seeds to bubblegum and asks, ‘Hey, did you quit dipping?’ To which I quickly replied, ‘Yep, 120 days ago.’ Another dad we know, let’s call him ‘Todd’ kind of laughs saying, ‘Exactly 120 days ago?’ I said confidently, ‘Yes, one hundred twenty days ago. I quit on March 8th.’
The Don’t Get It
So ‘Mike’ follows that up saying, ‘Yeah, I quit dipping about four years ago.’ (It was about 4 years ago that Mike’s son mine started running in the same sports circles so I wouldn’t remember if I ever saw him dip.) Being the friendly, magnanimous bastard I am and in an attempt to keep the parental, sideline banter ongoing, I followed with, ‘Good for you Mike. I hadn’t realized you ever dipped.’ Mike caps that with, ‘Yeah, I’ve been using this nicotine gum ever since. You should try it.’
I could only answer with, ‘Nah, I went cold turkey. I needed to break the addiction to nicotine.’ I think the group conversation then quickly moved to Mike Todd’s joint family vacation to Florida next week.
