Study: Vaping Could Nearly Triple the Chance of Smoking in Teens
See… it’s stuff like this that really makes me fear the vapers out there. They’ll tell you just how much safer these products are. They’ll tell you that vaping was the ONLY thing that allowed them to finally quit smoking and that they’re so much healthier now.
All of those things may be true… but then you run across a story / study like this. I hate to say ‘I told you so’…
This study, from The Ohio State University shows strong evidence that teens who vape are more likely to take up smoking or smokeless tobacco. The study that was published in the journal Addictive Behaviors in November, 2020 concludes, “Adolescent boys who used e-cigarettes had increased risk of later initiating traditional tobacco products when compared to similar boys who had never used e-cigarettes.”
Brittney Keller-Hamilton the study’s lead researcher said, “We identified two groups of young people who were equally likely to start vaping based on a number of factors, and then we compared the outcomes over the course of the study. We found that e-cigarette users were 2.7 times as likely to try smoking.”
I’m not going to get into the harm reduction argument here. I’ll even capitulate that vaping may be ‘safer’ then smoking. But studies like this, that show vaping leads BACK to smoking (and smokeless) take a lot of teeth out of that (rather flimsy) argument for me.
