Words of Wisdom

Two To Twelve Months

Months of the Year

Just about a year and a half ago a friend of mine who I met through cycling had a lump on his tongue that had been bothering him a bit. He didn’t think much of it at first. After a few weeks that lump seemed to have grown a bit. My friend decided to get it checked out. He went to the Dr. and the biopsy came back that it was definitely cancer and that they would definitely need to take care of it ASAP.

He ended up going through several treatments and ultimately had a chunk of his tongue removed. 6 months later the lump came back on another portion of his tongue. He’s since had his tongue removed completely and now has a hole in his throat as well. It was day by day for awhile – he pulled out of it a bit only to find out more news – his cancer has spread further in his mouth and now the Dr. told him the only way for them to get at it would be by removing his eye. He’s opted not to go this route and is instead on chemo – buying time.

Two To Twelve Months

The professionals have given him 2 to 12 months. My friend has started to say his goodbyes. The scary thing – my friend never once touched smokeless tobacco. He wasn’t even a drinker – very healthy guy who has lived the majority of his life as a Vegetarian too. I found out that he was given his death sentence this weekend and that’s when I decided it’s not worth it. I’ve failed my quit before, but I’m not going that route this time. We can’t control what life has in store for us, but we can certainly control what we put in our bodies.
