What the Hell Happened to the Forums?
If you’ve been paying attention over the past several months you knew that a change to our forums was coming. We first announced the upcoming changes back in July on this post. If you’ve been keeping up with our social media over the past several days this post may be a repeat for you so I’ll apologize in advance but I wanted to be as transparent as possible with what’s been going on.
We’ve been asked what happened to the forums over the past several days.
- These forums were originally built on a software called InvisionFree in November of 2006
- InvisionFree was purchased / became Zetaboards – still essentially the same company.
- Fast forward about a decade and Zetaboards was acquired by TaptaTalk. At the time, Tapa told Zeta (who told us) that nothing really would changes other then enhancements. This wasn’t the case.
- Tapa decided to shelve the Zeta product and ‘migrate’ all forums to TapaTalk
- For weeks (months?) we worked with them letting them know all of the specifics to our forums, tried to get our data (they wouldn’t give it to us), etc.
- They told us they’d be doing final migrations within 2 or 3 days
- They migrated us in the middle of the night without so much as an email heads up
- TapaTalk was here, complete with ads (which we’ve ALWAYS paid to suppress and had no control over)
- Yesterday morning, we spun up these forums, on a software called SMF, which we host, which will always be ad free.
- We’re in the process of migrating important data but much (most) of it is available on the main site (www.killthecan.org).
- The Tapa version of the forum will be kept online (in read only format) for historical purposes at archive.killthecan.org
After a few days it became abundantly clear that TapaTalk wasn’t the right place for KTC. The best choice going forward is to build the right forum for us so that’s what we did. We found a software that we can grow with, instead of fighting the walls of Tapa.
That being said, there is still work ahead. All users will need to “re-register” with their username and password. We realize that this will mean there will be some pathetic trolls who have been banned previously that will try to slip back through the cracks. We’re aware and will deal with them as quickly as we can. It takes quite a bit to be banned from our forums but we do what we can to ensure that we’re providing for our purpose: to quit dipping.
Over the next few weeks the admin and mod team will work to bring historic information to the new site. Thank you for sticking with us as we work through all this. Your patience is sincerely appreciated.
Welcome to the new KTC. We are confident that it will be better than ever. ktcforum.org
Post roll, keep your promise.
Not much of a Cliff Notes version, but that’s the jist.
