What To Expect When You Quit Dipping

What To Expect When You Quit Dipping

So you want to quit dipping and you would like to know what to expect when you do. We’re not going to pull any punches around here, it’s tough. That’s why we’re all here. This timeline has been put together over the years with the input of THOUSANDS of quitters. It has been shown to be remarkably accurate from the time you STOP USING NICOTINE.

Days 1 through 3 – Pure hell. You will walk in the fog. Nothing will seem real. Your brain is wondering where the hell its fix is and it is going to punish you until you come up with it. 72 hours, that’s all you need to get the nicotine out of your system. This is where you start to deal with the physical withdrawal associated with quitting dip. Drink lots of water. Read, post, read and post. Don’t take your anger out on your loved ones. We always tell everyone………Make this quit about YOU. If you quit for your wife, girlfriend, boyfriend, kids, mommy or daddy, you will resent them during this period. Quit for yourself and come in here to rant. Yell at us. Bitch at us. We can take it. We’ve been there.

Days 4 through 20 – Here comes the mind games. The nicotine is out of your system now. You will still have some physical things to deal with.

  • Cravings
  • Irritability
  • Insomnia
  • Fatigue
  • Inability to Concentrate
  • Headache
  • Sore throat
  • Constipation, gas, stomach pain
  • Dry mouth
  • Sore tongue and/or gums

Yep, you have this to look forward to. Your brain is rewiring itself. It isn’t used to being in an oxygen rich environment. Your body is responding in kind. Everything is a mind game now. All the cravings you have are actually due to triggers. Triggers are events where you are in a situation you would normally dip in. Mowing the grass, playing poker online, playing golf, working on the car………you get the picture. Keep drinking water, use seeds, the fake stuff, whatever you need to keep the dip out of your mouth. Remember, oral fixation is part of our habit, something you will eventually need to break. For now though, use all the tools you have.

Days 20 – 50 – You’re winning. Life isn’t great, but you probably had a couple of nights where you actually got some sleep. You might notice you’re going to bed earlier than you normally do. Not staying up to get in that last dip. You may notice some sores in your mouth. You’re thinking, “great, I quit dipping and now I have cancer.” You almost certainly don’t. Your mouth is healing itself. Tiny ulcers you’ve had for a long time are healing. We recommend you visit your dentist around the 30 day mark. Don’t be a pansy, just do it. He or she will be very supportive and they can explain the sores much better than we can. Don’t let your guard down. Don’t go out drinking with the fellas or the girls. We also recommend that you don’t drink for at least the first 50 days. Drinking is a huge trigger event and it weakens your resolve.

Days 50 – 70 – Cruise control. Life is really good. You still think about it, but this is good stuff here. Some people may suffer anxiety attacks during or a little before this stage. Some doctors say we dipped to relieve anxiety anyway. Some people can push right through this, others need a little help. Talk to your doctor before you quit or immediately after you quit. They will know what to do. Some give Wellbutrin or Lexapro. Lots of people in the support community take or have taken these medicines and can help you with the affects. Don’t wait till you get to this stage of the game to talk to a doctor. You’ll cruise through this stage much easier if you know how to take care of the anxiety or at least know it’s coming.

Days 70 – 90 – Late term craves, the doldrums, the blahs, the blues. Some people end up feeling like they are right back at day 1. The fog, the haze, the craves. It can be a tough time. You need to let people in your group know this is happening. Time to circle the wagons to get through it. It usually only lasts a few days. Fight through this and make sure your order your HOF Knife or Coin. Here are a couple of articles about this time period which we refer to as “The Funk”

Days 90 – HOF – Houston, resume the countdown. Enjoy the hell out of these last 10 days. You will be celebrating with your group as you all enter the HOF. It is a great feeling and an accomplishment you should not take lightly. Do something special for yourself and your family. They put up with your sorry ass for the last 90 days and they deserve something too.

100+ Days – Stay vigilant. Use the tools you have, to continue beating back any cravings or urges. You will still experience dip dreams and longings, but you are fully qualified to beat them down. Continue to post roll with your group. Get into the newer groups and help somebody out. Pass it along. Live the dream.

Hello, new to the group. Was going to start today ( only because I have 2 pouches left in can) but talked myself out of it. Amongst quitting dip I have other issues that will no doubt compound the process. For instance I’m a little type “A” , so starting on a Monday would be better than 7:44 in the morning on Saturday. I know it’s crazy, just the way I’m wired I guess. I will give it another go on Monday.

Okay got it! Getting the vibe this is not a Dear Abby group lol. I’ll post when I actually do something about it, on Monday.
For some of us picking a day and having ducks in a row works best. No doubt it’s an excuse. Glad to be in this group and I actually feel revved up for my start date, like I’m starting a new job or something.

I noticed a lot of info here that suggest changing things like friends that dip or certain triggers like alcohol or stress. My trigger is just plain ol being awake. I chose dipping after 5 years of smoking so I didn’t have to wait for breaktime to smoke, instead I’ve got one going all day long because I can hide it nd do it anywhere. Thoughts?

My best friend dips . Itā€™s not a trigger . I choose to not chew . I donā€™t see booby traps that will impede , or make me falter .
I gain strength from this site and those before me who have quit .
I am the asshole in charge of my own destiny .
Good luck. You have taken one step ,
It is desire . Drive on .

Chewie is tough on all of us because he knows what he is talking about. You gotta want it bad enough or you will just go back to chewing after some excuse in your life.
I failed a couple of serious times, because I wasn’t totally ready. I thought, “we’ll I’ll just quit until I feel like it”, or another time, I put a serious effort, but in the back of my mind, the thought of dipping again after a certain time was still lurking.
The last time, I quit cold turkey and realized I needed help, so I came here and a couple of guys (JayP, JeffJ, Shiva and others) helped me get through the tough times.
When Chewie tells you to change your vocabulary, he is also referring to your mind. No one can help you until you’ve made that decision to quit. I hope that helps dude. Let us know how your quit is going.
Sincerely
DDD

Not sure what to tell you there Mark, I am disappointed, but not surprised, when I failed, it took me 4 years to come back in here with my tail between my legs. All i can say is go and continue dipping until you’re ready to quit, take 4,5,10 years if you want, or you can get back on that horse right now and start again. You saw how hard it is, it doesn’t get any easier. It’s your call partner…….

Yes, I agree 100% with DDD, take 1,5,10 years to decide when it’s time to be free. Only you will know when it’s time. You will never quit for the wife, kids, parents…you can only do this FOR YOU. I’ve said it before, it’s the most selfish thing you can do, is quit. It will ONLY be for yourself and no one else. I dipped for nearly 30 years. I didn’t quit for anyone other than myself….and believe me, I had several “other” reasons to quit and didn’t. 13 hours is a good start, but I honestly don’t think you’re ready…maybe you can prove us all wrong?
Good Luck

I have a question I dipped a can a day for ten years then I was 6years clean i started having regular life problems and picked up a can about two months ago. The fist dip was great but now I donā€™t like it anymore. Heartburn gas bloating Diarrhea I feel like it adds to my stress. I remember quitting the first time. It was awful depression restless leg syndrome stomach problems the list goes on. I thought I was going to die. Since itā€™s only been two months will I have the same withdrawals will they last as long? I sure hope not !!

31 days in. I think COVID is making this quit harder. there is nothing I would rather do then go buy a log and fire through it one lip after another. Luckily I supposed flavored tobacco was outlawed in my state (MA) so quiting seemed like the more appropriate option then getting adjusted to a new flavor. Its struggle city today but this too shall pass.

From my personal experience, this 30-50,60 days is the toughest period. Your brain is seriously rewiring itself to live a life without nic bitch. It will make you feel the agony and all sorts of dirty dancing to trip you. Good news!! once you are through this period, you’ll be equipped to handle this well and from then on you can see your recovery unfolding slowly but surely.
This too shall Pass. This is the battle cry I loaned from JayP and I still remind myself on dog days.

[1 year anniversary] Emotional freedom tapping (EFT) helped me the most! Natalie Glanell was my coach. Hang tough.. it got was easier after 100 days. I would have tough days here and there, then tough hour here and there and then ever now and then have a craving. I still get an occasional craving but it last about 3-5 seconds. I then remind myself of the worry, heartburn, smelly spit cup, gross teeth, wasted $300 a month ETC.. I seriously don’t miss it all the majority of time. Most weeks I don’t even thing of it. It takes a full year to get to that but i marked it in increments of 30 days. by the third month it was very doable. keep in mind, I dipped ONE AND HALF cans of Copenhagen a day for 30 YEARS!!

I know I still have 2 months to go to complete my two years quit, but I went ahead and ordered my 2 year coin from this site, I figured it would be a present to myself and to remind me of the days I’ve been free of Nicotine.
I saw other brothers taking a picture of their coins while on some adventure or get together, I want to do the same and share it with you all.

Day 667

The thread got kind of long so I decided to put this note at the top. CONGRATULATIONS!! JeffJ, you made it to your sixth year of your quit. That is AWESOME!!.
Besides Chewie I know there are other older brothers, but rarely hear from them so to me you and Jayp are spearheading this combat mission and leading the platoon.
I know that readers probably get bored of us repeating the story about when we started, but it is supposed to help the new guys that are starting out, most of us read the newest posts and do not go deeper to read older text. So yes, it feels good to look back and see where you came from. Your nicotine nemesis lays on the floor destroyed by your mighty sword after several days of battle when you finally mortally wounded it. Afterwards you decided to walk away and put distance between you and it, each day the memory of that 100 day battle seeps away, but you have to remind yourself, that those Nicotine adversaries can mount a sneak attack and snare you with their deadly grip at anytime.
It is weird folks yesterday i crossed the dreaded day number of my quit and just couldn’t bring myself to write in here during that day so I decided to wait and congratulate you guys the day after.
Especially Jeffj, dude, most of us dealt with the daily nuisance of the symptoms, but you actually got sick from it and recovered, that my friend is a heroic episode of resilience. Well done sir, Well done!
To the rest of the warriors, OORAH! keep fighting!

Thanks man, you are doing awesome also. Itā€™s strange how 6 years ago we all started our journey and here we still talking about our quits.

Again. Thanks for mentioning my sickness. Or the word is cancer. I talk to many people who had my cancer on a few sites for cancer. Itā€™s goes to show you, you can quit chewing, and if your unlucky as I was, fight cancer two years after I quit. I talk about it often how lucky I was I quit…. things could have been worse for me.

When I see people here saying they canā€™t do it ( quit) I say, at least try. I hope no one ever has to sit with a doctors and they tell you.. you have cancer, or endure 6 hours of chemo… if any one needs a reason to quit, I am happy to tell you of 3 surgeries, 7 weeks everyday of radiation and every two weeks 6 hours of chemo… feeding tubes and cannot work for almost a year

I hope my story helps you quit chewing.. we are all human… chewing tobacco is full of carcinogenic products .. I have a friends who chewed and ended up with pancreatic cancer, the doctors said tobacco played a role in his cancer also(. I had throat cancer)

I came back after 4 years after my quit, and here you are along with Shiva and Jayp. We all got it done!

I am thankful being able to meet you guys.. and DDD.. everyone should read you hall of fame. I have read it many times…and it motivates me still this day

My car ( 1975 Laguna s-3, 400 small block ) if finally almost to paint. How is your project? jayp what classic do u have?

It’s there Jeff but not in the same league as US. Most mid-income people started having cars only in 2000s and before that car was a luxury. So, yes classic cars are there but few.

Hey Jeff, I just read this post and honestly, if this doesn’t motivate you to want to quit then you just aren’t ready. One of my biggest worries when I used is that I’d get sick from using. After quitting (and reading your fight) I’m thankful (and was dam lucky) I didn’t get it. Thank you for sharing your fight (both) with the board. DDD is right, what you went through is Heroic and Resilient. Getting through a quit and cancer is something many of us won’t face, I do appreciate you sharing this with us all.
My “classic” is a 1987 , Ttop Mustang GT. Still has its original paint…and tho it’s had some modifications on its original 302 engine, it’s still very close to being stock. I gutted and redone the entire interior last winter…that was a project!
DDD, I appreciate all of your motivational posts on this board, Your words still solidify my quit today, I say you’ve taken the sword of motivation on this board. I appreciate seeing you reaching out to others, on your way to 2 years free.
Shiva, I know you say you are well, I hope you and the family remain safe. Last I heard the pandemic was ramping up a bit in your country..be safe! I see you, like DDD are still helping others here, that is the way it should be, paying it forward!
I guess it’s time for me to go on my morning run folks, this was something I incorporated in my quit, 6 years ago and have made it part of my life again. I was an athlete in HS, kind of lost my way for a while after college, but found my way back to being active again after quitting that nasty ass habit.
Take care and stay quit!

JayP- thanks. We are doing fine although the cases are still climbing pretty fast here. We average about 66k+ new cases a day officially but I think the actual might be 2-3 times more :(. The stringent lockdown helped to slow down the pandemic but in a country with so much population I think you can only do so much.
You hit the nail. If Jeffā€™s post doesnā€™t inspire to quit then God only help. Jeff- You are a hero, the things that youā€™ve gone through and stand firm. You are awesome.

So I am about 5 days into a quit. I didn’t choose this the state I live in banned the sale of any flavored tobacco. I stocked piled for the moment but just finally ran out. I have been dipping for about 13 years and quit maybe 2 or 3 times for nothing much longer then 60 days. This time around feels a little different at least in the beginning and maybe its due to the fact that I don’t have access. But my sense of taste and smell seem to be way stronger and I’m not sure if that’s possible anyone else experience that before about 5 days in everything tastes and smells different?

I know I may get creitisam, but I have been dipping for 20+ years. I have had countless times I wanted to quit. I keep telling myself, “now isnt a good time with stress”, etc. I’ve been dipping so long it seems I cant even remember what it’s like to not have the can on me. The first thing I do when I leave the house is make sure I have my can first, and then phone, etc. I wouldnt even know know where to begin to remotely try to put the can down. I get anxious just thinking about trying to put the can down. Hell I have a dip in as I am typing out this comment. I have alot of respect for all of you who are currently quitting, and successfully put the can down for good. I just dont know with me having PTSD, and chronic insomnia, if I can put the can down.

30+ year dipper. Started at age of 19. I’ve been quit for 81 days now. Everything you just described is where I was at 81 days ago. I started and ended my day with a dip. Every thing in between was waiting until the next one. One of the hardest parts about quitting? Taking the first step. You focus on each day and that days step. This site is awesome. I found that it gave me more desire to quit when I knew others were going through it with me. You will make connections and receive support when you are having a rough day. But if someone like me can start this journey you can too. You came to this site because you want to quit. Take that first step.

Tate,
I am 57 days into this crap and I tell you that if I can get 57 days into this you can too! I dipped for 20+ years-from age 19-42. I got my inspriation from reading RIch dad poor dad. The first step is you have to tell yourself you want it gone! you don’t want to do it anymore! I have four kids and a wife and told myself I wanted to make memories, not become one. I had quit for 16/20/30 days before. This time I wanted it and besides these guys will blow up your phone if you don’t post roll!. you are 72 hours away from freedom. after that it is just not buying it. I am 5 years sober, 57 days nicotene free. It is a great feeling not waking up and trying to find a way to get that 1st chew. Nothing owns me

I have been chewing for at least 25 years and averaged a can a day. I quit cold turkey on the 22nd of this month so I have 3 days in.
The point of my reply is that I have had chronic insomnia for a while now. I’m now thinking my insomnia was from the dip. (but our bodies are complex and react different) Even though it’s been a few days, I’m starting to feel tired like normal at bedtime. So that’s one of the pros of quitting….the cons are many as expected and come with no surprise…..I’ve been feeling agitated and walking in a fog. I’m ready to take it one day at time. Each day that passes the better chance I have at succeeding.

Today marks 6 years free from smokeless tobacco. Time has flown by, I still can’t believe I’ve been free from this terrible addiction for 6 years. I accidentally stumbled upon this site and I never looked back. I want to give a big thank you to Chewie for supporting my rants in the early days and to the others who joined me (Jeff, DDD and Shiva) as well as all the others who came through and went through the battle. Even you new quitters posting your battles today, help solidify my position on quitting. You guys remind me of where I was 6 years ago and it’s something I never want to go through again.
I was almost a 30 year Dipper, can, can and a half a day addiction. Dipping was my life. I’m going to say it again, if you’re reading this, and are not sure you can quit, you can! It isn’t easy, I won’t lie, but each day you refrain from plugging, is another day you approach freedom from it. If my ass can Kill the Can, you also can!

Congratulations JayP, You and Jeff are the ones we look up to. Though some of us that started with you guys fell down, you all kept going and didn’t give up. I am 3 months away from completing 2 years of quit. I should have been right there with you guys, but I chose to be a fool and continue dipping. I learned my lesson though, the second time i started my quit was worse for me, why? because I knew what was coming every step of the way and though you know it’s coming you cannot fully prepare for it. Day after day, hit after hit, time slows down and all the time you’re thinking, the hell with this I am gonna go and get me some turd. The physical symptoms I overcame with ease the second time, but the brain games were tougher the second time around.
All of you guys reading our posts hopefully can get some guidance and give you an extra push to keep going. I know it did for me when I would read about guys that were ahead of me in the quit.
I know I did my share of ranting in this site, some people read them some didn’t, but it was the one tool that help me continue with my quit. Every once in a long while I think about dipping, but it is a very weak thought that goes away quickly. I used to ask the Elder brothers in here, as I call them, How does it feel to be years apart from the tobacco, do you all have craves? Well, I am right there now with almost 2 years under my belt, but I still ask to those that have more years away, How does it feel to be that far away from the tobacco? Do you all miss it sometimes?

Thanks DDD, I want to say that you coming back and getting through it this time, should also be an inspiration to anyone who has fallen, but didn’t know if they could get back on track. You did it!! And almost 2 years clean now? It seems like yesterday you were counting your first 100…it goes by so fast. Yet, when you’re the one doing the shoveling, it seems slow. I applaud you for your courage.
As far as cravings, if I want one, 6 years later, it’s a fake one. I will say I do occasionally take one these days. But my “bro-mance” with nicotine dip, is long, gone. I don’t even think about it like I did…more like a obsession, not a thought.
I do believe some “feelings” I may have, like irritability, light headedness or even concentration issues, that I occasionally deal with even today, were probably always there, but not noticable, because nicotine masked them. Or, perhaps I’m just getting older ?
Anyway, no, I don’t think about ever getting a can of Skoal, Wintergreen Long Cut anymore. I don’t even look at those cans behind the counter any longer either. Plenty of people dip around me these days too and it doesn’t affect me, at all.
I’m done, like you, I quit once, for 6 months, then foolishly started again. This time, I’m done.
Take care DDD, good hearing from you, get to 2 years, then move right along to 3

Congrats on 6 years. I am not far behind you!

I am happy DDD and shiva finished the journey. Itā€™s a great feeling putting the nic bitch behind us all.

I feel as though I never had a dip( besides a few scars on my neck from my cancer). I donā€™t crave anything. I donā€™t dream about it.. I donā€™t use fake stuff. I just feel like I have been blessed to stop Copenhagen .. my buddy still chews. I told him. I am in almost 6 years. His excuse is. He will go crazy. I said. Itā€™s better then chewing… he will never quit. You need to want to quit to fight the battles

Thanks Jeff, yes sir, we were right by each other with the quit. I know you were close to hitting 6 yourself.
Couldn’t agree more, you have to want to quit. I didn’t quit for anyone/thing but for my own self.
I don’t tell people they need to quit, I hated hearing that stuff from people when I was an addict. I honestly just didn’t want to quit. But the time came where I was just done with this shit.
Once I came to that point, it was time.

6 years today. Never forget it. I woke up that early August 14 2014 and told
My wife. I am done with Copenhagen. Threw the can out. I didnā€™t find kill the can till I was day 10 or 11. This place helped so much. DDD was a huge motivation for me. And I was always behind jayp and shiva.

I am so happy we all got it done. New guys. Donā€™t give up. Now I donā€™t even think about Copenhagen. The battle was well worth it to me.. 6 years clean. Hard to believe it. I guess a pat on the back is ok…

Congratulations Jeff, I had you on my office calendar and I wasn’t there today to remind me. You mentioned the day back when I hit my 6 year mark. Crazy how fast it has went…but it does seem like yesterday when I myself stumbled on this site. I agree, DDD had a knack for writing some pretty motivating posts. He helped push me along as well as you did. You couldn’t possibly put a price tag on those first 100 day gripes I shared here with you and this board…they are so priceless, I printed them and still have them.
But this isn’t about me, this is about your milestone Jeff, congratulations again…you are an inspiration to me and several others. Sure, I was ahead of you, but you kept me there, for that, I say again, THANK YOU!
A few others deserve thanks, Shiva was definitely a big part too, Steve and Rick as well, but they disappeared.
As far as Woodward, all the cool cruises have been shut down from my understanding. We have a woman drunk with government power running out state currently…you understand this living in Cali. Let’s not get it twisted for the feminist that see this, I don’t mind a woman leader, but this one can suck a pair of lemons!
I hope someday we can meet up for a round of golf and drinks.
Congrats again on 6 years free Jeff, stay safe and let’s head to 7!

Congrats Jeff on 6 years :). I am very happy on your milestone and you along with JayP, DDD and all others have been a great inspiration to me. I would really doubt if I’ve reached this far, had you guys were not there. I still remember the first 100 days when each day was miserable and how you along with DDD and JAyP were always there to reply to my mumbling and groans. I felt so ashamed after my first failed attempt. In fact, I was lurking around after my first failed attempt and once I decided to quit once and for all, the posts from DDD and that he is on the way to glory was what inspired me to come out in the open and be brave about it.
I always love your confidence and the way you conquered this. A big kudos to you šŸ™‚
Nowadays, it is very very rare for me to even get a thought about this. I don’t even get dip dreams or smoke dreams anymore.
Can’t wait to see your car once it is all painted :).. Great going Jeff. I am so thankful to almighty for getting such great friends.

This too, Shall pass…is correct Shiva, hang in there. I have a feeling, lockdown is coming again for us all in Michigan, but its not about the Covid cases increasing, it’s about politics. It’s my opinion, this Governor wants us voting from a mailbox and not a poll. In other words, protesting (rioting) isn’t a concern, but voting polls are. ?
I digress.

Glad I quit chewing. I would have burned through 2 cans of cope a day with all this crap.

Although. I feel I have become more mello since like year 3 of my quit.

So. We are shut down again. I do now is work the classic car. Itā€™s off to paint in September.

Hey JeffJ glad to hear from you, it’s been a while. What color is the car going to be? As for me, I finally dropped a New engine in my truck and kept it pretty much stock, going to add a 2 inch lift kit later and start working on high performance mods as well. Here in Texas, we were opened then closed and now want to go to lock down again. Frustrating, but what can we do? But you are right, i remember coping with all anxiety, frustration and stress by popping a wad of snuff. These times would have been perfect to go through 2 cans per day.
I am glad I am off it for good.

KB, Cmms, Steve – Anxiety is for real and it hurts some quitters more than others. Anxiety and Depression wreaked havoc for me. But the good news… It will get better, much better. Trust me.
When exactly? Each individual is unique and so is their symptoms. It was one hell of a struggle for me in the first 3 months. Things started getting better after 100 days and much better after 200 days. One thing I can promise. It will definitely get better.
Keep fighting the good fight. When in doubt, stop for a moment and look at the path you have crossed and soak in what you have achieved. You always have friends and achievers here.

Nice job man. I used tobacco for 20 years, starting when I was 14. Today is day 90 for me. Fog is sporadic and even when it does set in, its much clearer than before. Iā€™m battling anxiety and dizzy spells. I went to Walmart and got some stuff for stress. My wife told me to get something with Ashwagandha in it. I got some gummies and they work very well. Other than that I do CrossFit every morning, and try to keep to a routine to keep my mind occupied. Weekends suck though as I have a hard time getting up to do anything productive and all I want to do is sleep. Oh well I guess. Just have to keep on going and wait for this shit to end. Good luck!

: Hi all I am about 90+ days of tobacco free after chewing for 15 years. Over the last 3 months I have made a trip to the ER also saw a family doctor and also been the urgent care with the same issue I am having a loud beating heart fluttering feels like I’m having a heart attack and it’s terrible. I’ve had three EKGs and they became perfectly fine my blood pressure is perfect and my blood work was perfect. I’m a healthy in shape human being and still have constant chest palpitations or feel like I do. can you guys please help me out I’m really struggling these last couple days and have not slept in the last 24 hours
My anxiety was so bad that my left arm was getting numb and it felt like I wasn’t able to breath. Doc put me on BusPar which it seems to help but I can’t sleep whatsover. I’ve read a bunch of info on this site of the last few days and it may be what I am experiencing

Dude, I went through the same thing. I never had anxiety attacks before and it steam rolled me when I first had them. I didn’t know what they were and didn’t know what to do. I ended up in the ER twice, but like you and others here, there was nothing wrong.
That was a scary part of my quit, fortunately one crazy doctor friend of mine told me, “oh that’s easy, get yourself a watch with hands for minutes and seconds (old fashioned) when the attack occurs, immediately start looking at your watch and start counting the seconds 1, 2, 3…….and so on; the attack will try to get you to stop focusing and concentrate on the symptoms like palpitations and sweats and fast breathing, but continue looking at the seconds and count. You will see that the attacks become shorter and fewer until they disappear.” It worked for me, it might work for you all.

I do 99% of reading and posting on my phone so I tend to get frustrated and quit looking. I will keep researching because yes I do want to post as I feel compelled to help those where I can. This site has helped ease my anxiety more than anything. I chewed for about 2.5-3 years, at most I was at a can every 2 days, but probably averaged one every 4-5 days, so not the heaviest of users, but still proud to say today is day 20. Like most Iā€™m ashamed I even started, plus the fact I hid it from basically everyone I knew. Luckily I donā€™t have the anxiety as many have posted about (the mj helps with that), sleep is definitely worse but what always scares me is the occasional sore. Same routine; I notice a sore, I freak out for a day or so, itā€™s gone within 2 days, and then I can relax again. It can be such a mindf*** but I try to keep telling myself it can only get better before it gets worse. Iā€™m so committed to staying quit, and I come back to this site a couple times a week to keep me motivated. I had no idea this community existed but Iā€™m so happy I found it. Happy quit everyone

Even though we all were very much motivated to quit, we needed some support, help and guidance. More importantly some assurance that this process of coming out was only temporary and there will always be light at the end of tunnel.

Ok they say embrace the suck and fight thru the funk. After 93 days of embracing and fighting when will this crap end?! There is no way I will be going back to continue a 30 year addiction but man this is kicking my ass. Wicked sore throat for days on end, no meds will touch the discomfort and doc finds no issues. The throat is a major discomfort but does not affect me eating or drinking. It does make my voice feel weird but my wife says it sounds the same. Have not really had much of an appetite since my quit but always pound the water. Now sinus issues flaring up with those oh so wonderful headaches with bouts of nausea. Complete total exhaustion from all the stress (and worry about my health now) which is screwing up my sleep. Never had health issues and now I have them, please tell me its my body cleaning itself. Family docs have no clue about chewing addiction as all the info they have is for smokers and I have been there 3 times in 93 days.. Like I said I am in this to get clean but when does this crap end? Not much out there to help us close to 100 or over but dig thru the comments on this site and you find some similarities. I hate asking for help as we all think we can get thru things with no help. This is really bringing me down but by going thru this site has been a real help. Thank you to Chewie for starting this site and to all who have posted as it is the biggest help so far. Keep up the good fight and God bless.

Many other quitters who’ve been there Will agree….I was there, many here as well. If I can give you any advice… REMEMBER this feeling…and DON’T ever go back. The shit you go through now, will solidify your quit later, embrace the struggle! My favorite personal battle cry was “this too, shall pass” and guess what? It did! Hang in there. All your symptoms are consistent with anxiety. Took me 5-6 months before these symptoms went away. Now Iā€™m over 5 years quit and everything is great. I think it takes longer for these issues to go away for people quitting chew versus people quitting smoking. Probably due to higher nicotine concentrations.

Youā€™re through the worst part. Things will get better the next few weeks to 1-2 months.

I wondered if a lot of it is anxiety and depression reeking havoc on me. I have a sore tongue to along with the sore throat which only aggravates things. I would get a sore tongue after a ling day of dipping before but now its constant with my throat. Like I said I have been to 2 different family docs for throat and they canā€™t find anything. Thanks for the words of wisdom. My wife would agree that I am starting to wuss out but after 94 days who wouldnā€™t. I will win this and stay quit!

You seems to have the same kind and intensity of the symptoms I had. Depression and Anxiety were the worst 2 symptoms I had. It was very worse from around 25-65 days and beyond that I started to slowly improve. It was exactly like you said, sometimes I would really need to push through the day. Depression started going down after 100 days and by 150 days it was no longer bothering me. Anxiety took a lot longer to go down. There are couple of other friends here (Cal/Carey) who went through the same path like me.
Trust me, I feel what it is but it will really get better.

Just fyi, I was both a smoker and dipper. I am 467 days nicotine free in any form and I couldn’t be happier more.

Majority of the anxiety and depression come from my throat issues. Unable to get relief just sends the brain into a downward spiral, which completely wipes me out physically and mentally. Talked to a good friend of mine today and he takes flonase for allergies and post nasal drip. The allergies and post nasal drip did not start until he quit smoking. I have fall allergies but this spring/summer I have met many people that are suffering from allergies that they don’t normally have. So I going to give that a try and see but I did reach out to my family doc to get me a referral. Time will tell has I have good days and bad days. Yesterday was a very bad day but today was better and pray that tomorrow will be even better. Its very frustrating as I figured by now I would be feeling pretty good but still physically feel like its the 1st month. Going to try other allergy meds as I did try clariton and benadryl and they did not touch it at all. Keep fighting brothers and remember odaat. God bless and good night. Oh yeah, day 96 of forever with no nicotine.

Anyone ever get watery like leaks coming from their nose when quitting? Iā€™ve been off 7 days and had a leak after day 1. Felt like a nose bleed for 20-30 seconds. Have had a couple drips from the nose and liquid in the throat. Besides that Iā€™ve been trucking on relatively well.

Yes I did the first few days. I have had it happen just recently around day 30 as well but it went away.

Iā€™m 3 weeks into my quit and Iā€™ve been dealing with extremely sensitive gums. Is that normal and will it get better or should I go to the dentist to have it checked out?

im 192 days in. I had several throat issues so far in my quit. My throat felt like something was stuck down by my voice box. This issue comes and goes still, but is becoming less frequent, and weaker as time passes by. I thought for sure I have throat cancer, and I have been to the ER, and had all the test ran. Turns out nothing was wrong, and most of it was in my head.

I am 79 days quit after 30 some years of abuse and have the same issue. For about 3 weeks it been sore then settled around my adams apple. Been to doc twice for it and they found no issues but I do have a standing referral for ent doc visit. I also wondered as it made no sense to have issues now when I never did before. Other then the throat it still feels like week 2 with craves, weird pains, fog, anxiety, depression and wicked headaches. One day it will all be gone but it is amazing what your body gets used to. It will get better and we need to stay strong. Best thing I have done was join this site and getting closer to God as he says “cast your worries on to me”. God bless all who are fighting the good fight to stay clean.

Day 449-

Guys,
I am feeling awesome. I am really glad I took this path. Just wanted to share a note of thanks to all my mentors here and a very special thanks to my close quit buddies here (JayP, Jeff, DDD šŸ™‚ ).

Just a shout out to all the warriors here. There were many many days when I just wanted to throw out everything and go back to nic bitch. But I stayed. Thanks to everyone here. It took me sometime to get it inside my head that there is no “normal” as long as I am addicted. There is no real “pleasure” in taking them.

P.S: I have issues with anxieties and along with depression were my biggest challenges during the initial days. Folks, who have this issue, I can assure you it gets better. Don’t look for the day when it will get better. It will happen slowly for surely. You will see the difference when you look back in your journey. I still have some occasional anxiety issues (depression is no longer there after 150 odd days.. yay) but is lot, lot better than the starting days.

Stay safe everyone.

Hey JayP – thanks a lot for your wishes and it is so nice to see you back.
Too many things are going here (With China et al ). Lockdown has been pretty strict in my city and my strolls are limited to apartment terrace and occasional drive to nearby vegetable / grocery stores during the hours when the curfew is relaxed. Unfortunately, this is needed in a country like us with our population density where the pandemic can quickly go out of control :(. I just want this Corona to go away :(.. Days are getting blurred now.. I am so grateful I am no longer addicted. Imagine the pain of buying cans and anxiety of running out of stocks during these lockdowns (Lockdowns here are very severe and at times it will be even difficult to get essential things) šŸ™‚ :)..
Folks – I am also not getting the notifications any more. I think I stopped getting after Jun 2nd week.
Chewie – can you please check? Looks like some bug in the notifications system of the new site.

Haven’t seen Jeff/ Cal / Carey for a while. Hope you guys are safe and doing well. Please keep coming here.

Hey everyone, not new to the site but I never officially joined the forums when I quit. I was 800 days quit and had a slip up this past weekend (1 can on Sunday night). Now im at day two again. I feel like I never even quit, I have every withdrawal symptom I was experiencing 800 days ago (after just one can this time). Is this normal or just in my head? I feel like Iā€™ve undone two years of hard work with one careless night. Shows that you can never let your guard down I guess.

After 25 years of dipping, i quit for 99 days, I had a relapse and continued dipping for 4 more years, I quit once again and of course I had all the bad symptoms. I am not sure if the withdrawal symptoms are as bad if you only do it for one day after being quit for a long time, but whether it’s normal or not I’d rather not find out because I caved. Last night I had an intense craving, so even at 577 days or more you still get those craves. They do not occur as often as in the beginning, but they do happen. Hang in there Jim, the good thing is that you’ve gone through this before and you know what to do.

22 days today !! Clean and free !! No can. Thank you Lord!! Been a tough journey last few weeks. I quit cold turkey April 26. I have had all the withdrawal symptoms, sore throat and dry mouth and throat were the worse, mental fog to that was tough. Still fighting it a little but I am improving each day. Thatā€™s how I look at it, as if I am recovering from an illness. Finally had a few nights of decent sleep, first two weeks the night sweats were terrible and terrifying. I know I still have a ways to go but if I can do it so can everyone else!!! My heart rates have slowed and blood pressure has been more stable since I have been free of the can. I had a 5-6 can a week habit. Last time I bought any was April 18 that lasted till the 25 of April. I had been wanting to quit for a long time and decided that this was the time. I quit for my Lord and for me. I didnā€™t realize what a grip the can had on me, wow it had a hold. Now that I am free, what a blessing!!

Hello all. I am a twenty year dipper. I have two weeks now but I am getting myself all anxious thinking about throat cancer. I have what felt like a scab form in the back of my throat that has gone away but I still have this hacking cough (not corona). Is this normal for the first couple weeks? Not hard to swallow but just always feels like I need to fought something up. I appreciate the help and wish everyone the best.

Hang in there Mark! I just recently quit itā€™s day 18 now. I have had a sore throat and cough once in a while. The mental fog has been the worse. Days 1-3 were hard but 5-8 were even worse. Spent much time in prayer those days. Day 16-17 caught me out of the blue it was like starting all over again. I had quit cold turkey, I didnā€™t step down at all. Went from around a can a day to nothing. It was rough but so glad I did!! Stay strong and hang in there all, this can be beaten!! Freedom from the chains of the can.

I have had a similar issue of persistent cough and it was a combination of the irritants from tobacco and a dust mite allergy. After about a month of quitting and taking fluticasone before i sleep, the cough is gone. Good luck

How are you holding up Mark? I was a 30 year addict and now on day 97 and boy its a grind. Why do we allow ourselves to get involved in crap like tobacco? I have been suffering from an extreme sore throat with all the classic symptoms of allergy that I get in the fall from ragweed. I have been to family docs twice for it and they said it looked good but they ruled out allergies. I used other allergy meds but nothing would touch it. So I was talking to a friend of mine who quit smoking years ago who developed new allergies with post nasal drip. He takes Flonase for it and has success with it. So I got some yesterday to try and so far 30 hours later there is some relief. It needs to be taken daily to be effective they say so we will keep at it. It will be a struggle going forward but stay strong its worth it. I constantly feel as if I am stuck in month 1 with the symptoms I have. Some days are good some days are not but carry on and ODAAT brother. I have other comments on here addressing issues but quitting is the best thing I have ever done (other then marrying my wife). I give God, my wife, the prayer warriors and all my brothers on KTC credit for helping me stay clean. I pray that you will also and God bless.

Hi, day 6 it think with everything going on i lost count..been a nicotine user for almost 4 years. I had my first dip dream last night was so mad myself thinking i gave in quickly but thank god it was only a dream..is it normal to have joint and body aches and i get cold and hot easy. My mind kept playing games so i gave all my bank cards to my sister since we live together n told her my problem n not to give to me and if i needed something she can get it for me or go with me to get…its not fan but told myself everyday you feel like hell is another day without it and eventually it will end it wont last but if you go back to it the thing it dies to your body will last and even kill you. So keep going forwad. Thanks for the support its gud to know am not by myself.

I was exactly the same. I would also wake up and take a dip of cope almost every nite. I was addicted to cope and loved it. That was over 5 years ago when I decided to quit. You have found the right place for support. Itā€™s not easy but many of us have made the journey. My advise is to keep busy, read and post as often as you can. You have just started, donā€™t give up as the first step is the hardest. Each of us had a route to take, find what works, and give yourself victories, if you made it three days. Good job. Congrats Shiva on the 4 th floor Iā€™ll be on the 3rd in a few days. I have a question for you vets. I have recently been feeling pretty down last week was rough and I ended up going to my primary care for a checkup ( first one since Iā€™ve quit ) I told him about it and got to talking about my anxiety. He gave me some stuff to try and help manage it. Iā€™m kinda apprehensive to take but I have been taking it for the last few days. Just feel super tired and lethargic. Whatā€™s your guys opinions on these things ? Did any of
You take anything like that ?

JAYP
JAYP

Reply to  Bigdiesel90

BigD,
I didn’t take them during my quit, but did before I quit, for almost a year. When I quit, I felt it again (anxiety) thought it was coming back, but it was just short termed and only was “spotty” from then on. I’d say the first 100-200 days, were my toughest days. After that, I could manage any symptoms pretty well. I got on meds about a year before I quit Nicotine. I read a lot about anxiety and other mental ailments. I found a book called “at last a life” (poorly written) that I say was my break thru and started me on the road of getting away from the meds, weight loss and ultimately, free from nicotine.
What I can tell you, there is absolutely nothing wrong with medication. I was in a bad place and needed a crutch. I can also tell you, is that something that may work for me, may not for you. They ALL make you tired….and zoned out. I think they are designed to REALLY calm you down. I stopped and started 4-5 different ones before finding a fit.
I’m not a doctor so take my advice with a grain of sand. But don’t shy away from the meds, even if in just in the short term, if you need some help. You need a healthy mentality to be physically strong ?
Take care, be safe and stay quit!

Thanks a lot BigD.
I had major issues with anxiety. If you look into my past posts, you’ll see anxiety and depression were wreaking havoc. The first 30-60 days were horrible. Never want to go back. I realized I always had anxiety issues and I masked it to an extent with nicotine.
Depression was much better after 100 days (now I have none) but still had issues with anxiety even well past 300. What I noticed is though the frequency and intensity of the episodes gradually diminished after 100 days. It might be difficult to see it on a daily basis but let’s say if I compared it from 100 days to 200 days there was a lot of difference. Even now I get some minor episodes but it takes a lot more to rile up me and I have a better handle. Sometime around 70-80 days into my quit, my wife and I decided I need medical help and was about to book an appointment. Somehow, it never happened and after that I didn’t take any medications. I came here and posted a lot. In some ways, seeing reassurances from my friends here helped me big time.
But as JayP said, there is no harm in taking consulting a doctor and take the right help.
One thing for sure, when I look back, I clearly realize I had lot of anxiety issues when I use to dip and smoke and I took nicotine to mask them. I no longer have them and it is very very rare for me now.

Good luck and stay safe, BigD

Hi everyone Day 53, and it was a bad one. Heart palpitations all day, head fog. and then the worry about the fist two things. I play the game in my head is this because of the quit? Am I using the quit as an excuse to ignore something bigger that is wrong? and then that vicious cycle spirals and that doesn’t help at all. I sat here and read through everyone’s posts over the last few months and that does help. Stay strong, we can all get through this

Hang in there, I know I had some anxiety, and reading past posts. Other did also. Itā€™s part of the journey. The fog and anxiety will go away, takes some time, just keep going forward.

Go for walks.. that will help

Good luck. Keep going!!

Jeff is absolutely correct Greg, the early part of the quit is chucked full of ups and downs. Hang in there, it DOES get better. Go for walks, runs, lift some weights, try staying away from the junk food (I know it’s hard). Water is another friend, drink lots of it. Flush that junk out of your system. If oral fixation is an issue, don’t shy from some gum, sunflower seeds and a some non-nicotine dip. There are plenty of tools to get you through it. Keep at it, show yourself who’s in charge!
Good luck and post your victories daily!

Hey Greg listen to these 2 guys, they been quit for a long time, I started with them and caved in, but when i came back they coached me pretty good. I am now a year and a half quit thanks to them and others in here, but the biggest battle i had to fight for myself. Like us you can do it and you will do it. Don’t let the little nuisances of the beginning get you down. Stay Healthy.

Hello all!

Hope everyone is safe and doing well health wise and on your quit. During these stressful times, it would be easy to give up our quit wouldn’t it? Think of yourself as a sword. You are fine in peace times, just living day by day complaining about the little things and hanging out inside the sheath, but during war you are tested to the limit. This is our war, not only to the outside elements, but also the formidable stress inside of us. This is the time to show yourself what you are made of. The master swordsmith that created you with fire used the best elements and techniques because he knew there would be times like this. Keep fighting the good battle.

Sincerely
DDD

Hey every just checking in today is 279 for me. I feel like Iā€™m still grinding it out odaat, is everyday miserable !? No not everyday but I will say it feels like most days have been pretty shitty since around 200+ ish. Did anyone experience this long into the upper 200s ? You guys have helped me so much reading these posts and stuff. As cal has said some people feel great after 50,100,200.. I however feel better than earlier in the quit but some days are still just shit. Just didnā€™t know if any of you other dudes experienced it up here? Hope everyone is well

BidDiesel,
Congrats at 279! Odaat is the only way to freedom, keep on keeping on. Me personally, I think around 250ish things really calmed down…for me..I see others who are still battling things where you’re at. So everyone isn’t the same. Eventually (and maybe you’re there), most days become better than others, instead of “some”.
Keep at it, you’re killing it!

How long did everyone have a sore throat? I’m about 5 weeks into my quit. and I recently have started getting a sore throat. It could have nothing to do with quitting but I was curious. Also my tongue has a sore/kinda funny feeling to it anyone else have that?

I had a sore throat/ mouth for about 2 months ish then it started to go away. Remember youā€™re body is rebalancing without dip.

Hey Greg,
No,I personally didn’t have the sore throat/tongue….but I have seen a few out here with similar complaints. Like I’ve told others, we are all different and experience different things…for different periods of time. This site has so much good info for people quitting…it was my library during the first 3-400 days of my quit.
If things get too rough,go see a doctor. We’re out here sharing symptoms but can’t diagnose symptoms. I’d say what you’re dealing with IS something others have had (not myself) and part of the long list of symptoms associated with the quit.
Hang in there and keep at it!

1 Year and 14 Days

Hello folks,

It’s been quite a few weeks of hectic work and travel and couldn’t get much time to post. At least no more travels with COVID. I just came back y’day and have to wait and watch if I am developing any symptoms. Hope I do alright.
JeffJ, DDD, JayP, Cal, Carey – Hope all of you folks are doing good. I am just catching up on old posts and see you veterans are helping out the newbies a lot.. Wonderful. Will do my bit in the next few days.

Some strange pangs are coming may be once in a week or so. Otherwise I am doing pretty good.

Shiva. Good job. Put it on cruise control Nd donā€™t look back.
Hope everyone is hanging in there with the virus, here in southern Cali, pretty much lock down, but it does give me time to work on the classic car, my yard and some other jobs the wife gives me. Only reason I mention a few of these as. … in the past. All triggers for a dip. Now itā€™s not on my mi nd.

New quitters. Keep the fight.. donā€™t give up and you will win

Everyone be safe. Take care

I dont know how many times I’ve been going back to smoking and dipping. As a 16 year old I thought it was so cool and now being 23 almost 24 it’s starting to catch up. 7 years is way too long and I want this nightmare to be over. Every morning gets harder to breath and my teeth ache in pain. What are some ways you guys coped with the anxiety and cravings?
