What To Expect When You Quit Dipping
So you want to quit dipping and you would like to know what to expect when you do. We’re not going to pull any punches around here, it’s tough. That’s why we’re all here. This timeline has been put together over the years with the input of THOUSANDS of quitters. It has been shown to be remarkably accurate from the time you STOP USING NICOTINE.
Days 1 through 3 – Pure hell. You will walk in the fog. Nothing will seem real. Your brain is wondering where the hell its fix is and it is going to punish you until you come up with it. 72 hours, that’s all you need to get the nicotine out of your system. This is where you start to deal with the physical withdrawal associated with quitting dip. Drink lots of water. Read, post, read and post. Don’t take your anger out on your loved ones. We always tell everyone………Make this quit about YOU. If you quit for your wife, girlfriend, boyfriend, kids, mommy or daddy, you will resent them during this period. Quit for yourself and come in here to rant. Yell at us. Bitch at us. We can take it. We’ve been there.
Days 4 through 20 – Here comes the mind games. The nicotine is out of your system now. You will still have some physical things to deal with.
- Cravings
- Irritability
- Insomnia
- Fatigue
- Inability to Concentrate
- Headache
- Sore throat
- Constipation, gas, stomach pain
- Dry mouth
- Sore tongue and/or gums
Yep, you have this to look forward to. Your brain is rewiring itself. It isn’t used to being in an oxygen rich environment. Your body is responding in kind. Everything is a mind game now. All the cravings you have are actually due to triggers. Triggers are events where you are in a situation you would normally dip in. Mowing the grass, playing poker online, playing golf, working on the car………you get the picture. Keep drinking water, use seeds, the fake stuff, whatever you need to keep the dip out of your mouth. Remember, oral fixation is part of our habit, something you will eventually need to break. For now though, use all the tools you have.
Days 20 – 50 – You’re winning. Life isn’t great, but you probably had a couple of nights where you actually got some sleep. You might notice you’re going to bed earlier than you normally do. Not staying up to get in that last dip. You may notice some sores in your mouth. You’re thinking, “great, I quit dipping and now I have cancer.” You almost certainly don’t. Your mouth is healing itself. Tiny ulcers you’ve had for a long time are healing. We recommend you visit your dentist around the 30 day mark. Don’t be a pansy, just do it. He or she will be very supportive and they can explain the sores much better than we can. Don’t let your guard down. Don’t go out drinking with the fellas or the girls. We also recommend that you don’t drink for at least the first 50 days. Drinking is a huge trigger event and it weakens your resolve.
Days 50 – 70 – Cruise control. Life is really good. You still think about it, but this is good stuff here. Some people may suffer anxiety attacks during or a little before this stage. Some doctors say we dipped to relieve anxiety anyway. Some people can push right through this, others need a little help. Talk to your doctor before you quit or immediately after you quit. They will know what to do. Some give Wellbutrin or Lexapro. Lots of people in the support community take or have taken these medicines and can help you with the affects. Don’t wait till you get to this stage of the game to talk to a doctor. You’ll cruise through this stage much easier if you know how to take care of the anxiety or at least know it’s coming.
Days 70 – 90 – Late term craves, the doldrums, the blahs, the blues. Some people end up feeling like they are right back at day 1. The fog, the haze, the craves. It can be a tough time. You need to let people in your group know this is happening. Time to circle the wagons to get through it. It usually only lasts a few days. Fight through this and make sure your order your HOF Knife or Coin. Here are a couple of articles about this time period which we refer to as “The Funk”
Days 90 – HOF – Houston, resume the countdown. Enjoy the hell out of these last 10 days. You will be celebrating with your group as you all enter the HOF. It is a great feeling and an accomplishment you should not take lightly. Do something special for yourself and your family. They put up with your sorry ass for the last 90 days and they deserve something too.
100+ Days – Stay vigilant. Use the tools you have, to continue beating back any cravings or urges. You will still experience dip dreams and longings, but you are fully qualified to beat them down. Continue to post roll with your group. Get into the newer groups and help somebody out. Pass it along. Live the dream.

Day 9 of no nicotine. Wellbutrin made this so much easier. I recommend this medication for anyone trying to quit. Plus itās cheap. I only get cravings in the morning and evening. Canāt wait till this stops. I just wanna go an entire day without thinking about it

I am on day 160 right now. I had 3-4 days of little to no symptoms or mostly just very mild. The last 3 days they came back full effect. I am dizzy my brain is foggy and its just been going on for so many months i cant handle it anymore. Its unbearable. I have been eating healthy, blood pressure is perfect, i have been to the doc for blood work. I honestly feel the only think left is to get scans of my body to see what the hell is going on. so much tension in back of neck.
Hey Double D, take it easy. It’s all part of healing, what you are going through is the mental battle between your physical body and your mind. It is firing in all cylinders to drag you back to the old ways. This is one of the most dangerous stages of the quit. Only you can make this happen. Believe me, I was there, I caved in and had to start all over again. It’s a horrible feeling, you don’t want to do that. Go for walks and runs if you can, drink lots of water and get mad at it, i mean stark raging mad at that Nic bitch, come here and tell us how much you hate it, it worked for us and it will work for you. Hang in there brother.

Hello DD, yes. Although it is different for everyone, personally, it lasted for a year on and off. I donāt want to discourage anyone, like I said everyone is different, but it gets easier as times goes by. The important thing to remember is no matter how bad it gets, it will pass. Just take it one day at a time.
Almost 5 years here, I heard from Jeff and Shiva, we just need to hear from JAYP. I know he is close to 9 years also, maybe he will pop in soon and post his 9th year salute.

Going on day 10 right now. Cravings haven’t been super bad, withdrawals have been about a 3 out 10 on scale, definitely have had some mouth sores and I’ve been restless for some reason. The biggest change I have seen is my blood pressure going down. I’m about to set off on a caffeine and sweets cut.

my GP recently told me to lay off the lemon drop candy I used to replace the chew ( which I just noticed is now $9.79 a can in my area ) . That will be easy to give up . They have no withdrawal symptoms.
I am grateful for the simple and plain-speaking support offered by this group . Reading their stories was mostly what was reassuring. I didnāt need the personal interaction, but some do .

130 days quit. 43 days no porn. I have not been perfect on caffeine nor do I want to, but I only have it once, maybe twice a week. I have started a fasting regimen and am down 10 lbs. I hope to undo some of the stains I got on my teeth and days off of eating can’t hurt as well as there are benefits like autophagy. I’ve gone to an Orthodox church these past few weeks and that’s something I wanted to do for a great while. I have opportunities to break into plumbing, which is something I’m excited about.
This message board seems to answer prayers. I am happy in many ways. I am quite lonely. I used to joke about how dip was with me through the good times and the bad times. It would be nice to have a few friends who pushed me to be a winner and maybe a girlfriend.
I still have yet to replace TV with books, but I’ll get there soon.

Hello Shiva, It sure has been a long time. Glad to hear from you. Our visits here are now far and few, I remember those first 100 days, we were writing in here, cursing and kicking and screaming. Life sure is better without tobacco. In 2 months I’ll be 5 years without it.
Back here with updates. Almost one year since last dip. No more cravings, no more acidity, no more heart burn, no more stomach erosion, no more blood from mouth. Stayed dedicated and committed all this while. Some time cravings were there in the beginning but few slaps to myself helped me get over it. I can do it, you can do it, we all can do it !
103 days quit. About a month free of caffeine as well. 16 days free of porn. I
Know this isn’t the place for the latter two, but it feels like I’m becoming a new man and staying the same all at once and for whatever reason this webpage has helped me.
Dipping is definitely the first domino that helped me have the confidence to quit everything else, but I just want to be able to put my head on the pillow at night and not lay in my bed awake. I’m immensely proud of myself. I know I’m not going to recognize myself in a year or two. I can’t wait until the process of layering in new habits is over.
Once I feel more confident in these I’m going to start looking at replacing TV with books and getting rid of sugar (I gained 30 lbs this quit a lot of it is from the gym, a lot of it is fat.)
I am doing a good job of not betraying myself anymore. I don’t look at things that hurt my heart. I don’t put things in my body that kill me. I am pretty proud of that.
This is just plain amazing Jake! Thanks for sharing and you SHOULD be proud of all of your efforts. We have caffeine and porn ‘quit groups’ on our Discord community. It’s amazing how working through one habit (nicotine) will encourage people to tackle other issues in their lives.

Yeah. To a certain degree I feel like I haven’t met myself. I got hooked on video games at like 5. Then that lead me to easily getting addicted to porn at 9. Then I picked up coffee and dip to level me out at 15 to 16 or so. I’m 26 and I’m an alright enough guy but I’m on the trajectory to die alone with no friends having done nothing. My life won’t get better if I don’t change it myself.

Hi guys i am 149 days into my quit and i have been quit before in years past and had symptoms last this long but this time around it seems relentless. I have crazy dizzy spells for 60 to 70% of the day its like a lightheaded dizzy feeling, My sight is sensative at times. If i take anxiety meds it seems to nullify most of the symptoms. I have bad anxiety and some chest pain that arises too. i am 37 years old and in good health. I check blood pressure regularly and its good. i would really like to hear from someone who has had daily dizzy spells last this far into their quit and if so when did the go away.. the dizzy spells trigger the anxiety. some one help me
Hey good job for the quit. I am 3 years quit and suffer daily dizzy brain fog eyes are heavy pain under arm pit gerd pain been to every doctor had all scans possible. Even started mountain biking and still struggle driving. So it seems no one knows but messes with my daily life for sure.

Yes i had every check possible all good kinda thinking need to try and allergy test but yes been rough. But it may just be aniexty and maybe i need to get on some meds.
I know this post is a month old. I’m almost 3 years quit. And I had dizzy, anxiety type symptoms for around 8 months after I quit. It did eventually go away. The only thing I deal with now are cravings at times. Which is crazy, just how addictive the nic bitch is! I chew the fake stuff (Black Buffalo Zero) and drink coffee and that really helps with the cravings. Hang in there bud. It will pass. I’m wouldn’t give up my quit for anything. Being free from tobacco is a gift and keeps on giving. And all the suffering as we first quit is worth it. I probably gained 10-15, maybe even 20, years of life because I quit. Totally worth a few months, even a year, of quit symptoms.
awesome brother and thank you for your feedback. I for the last two days but has minimal symptoms for the first time in 5 months. It was a nonstop endless fight and trying to keep my sanity, especially with the dizzy spells and anxiety, I am sure i will have a few more bad days but it seems its letting off the gas just a little day by day. Sometimes it just feels like you cant take it anymore. Whoever is reading this who feels like you symptoms are different or will never end.. they will and you will get through it. Your mind is so powerful you have no idea. STAY STRONG. i had days where my withdraws were so bad i just broke down in tears.. its scary as shit.
I am four days into my second quit, it is so much easier with Wellbutrin and after reading Allen Carr’s Easy Way to Stop Smoking. I also switched to cigs the week before for the extra disgust factor. NAC, magnesium, agmatine sulfate, and black seed oil also are helping a ton, as do herbal non-nicotine pouches for the oral fixation.

Iāve been dipping 40 years but I only do it at night when Iām home alone watching tv but usually do 3/4 a can a night. My mind is spinning and Iām glad I found a group that I can converse with as I need accountability

It’s been 70 days tomorrow or so now after 10 years. I’ve gone to the gym with the money I’ve saved. I’ve started talking to girls, because I don’t always have a lip in. I have gotten braver. I wish I could immediately install the mindset I have towards dip into every area of life. Sadly it’s a killer around porn. I’m trying to be mindful around my urges and maybe replace porn with meditation, but you can’t just avoid the internet in the world we live in. Once I get a good streak going I’ll probably keep it going, because I’m noticing the addiction lies better, but I haven’t gotten there yet. Rome was not built in a day I guess.
I figured I owe it to every one on here since I used the platform for my quit. About 30days into it and it has been interesting.I Would go a week with out then a week with it for months. Had a long road trip and knew it was time to quit for good after. Got a can for the ride up. Dipped the whole can in the drive. Had a weird painful sore throat immediately after that drive from the dip. Always happened when Iād dip leading up to the road trip Sore throat messed with my mind over the next few weeks and was certain it wouldnāt go away and it was cancer. Couldnāt stop thinking about it. About 14 days in it is gone finally. I Would experience this every time Iād dip for the months leading up to this point. Got worse and worse. Just man up and donāt get weak and make it through the 2 week mark. I feel so much better, cleaner mouth, no sores, no thoughts of cancer anymore. No nasty spitters all over. Glad I quit. Shit is terrible. Will eventually kill you and take your peace of mind and all
your money. Same with alcohol. And nothing looks dumber now that I quit with someone with a mouthful of chew. I was an idiot. Only reason I started was to fit in with everyone else.

It was 5 weeks friday. So I’m at day 39 or so. I feel like it ought to be mentioned that there are probably the worst craves here but in a weird way. I don’t betray myself anymore, so I’m not going to give in. But if I quit dipping, then I will have the confidence to quit porn, cut down my screen time, and maybe go on a diet and who knows how I change my life for the better from there. But there’s that sorta niggling voice in the back of my head that is like “it would be easier to go with the flow. You don’t even know life will be better if you can do all these things.” I don’t know that that’s exactly right. It might just be a general sense of loneliness that dip kinda assuaged.
I’ve been approx 3 weeks without a dip now and I’m a little freaked out. I found a small pink bump on my bottom gum three days ago. It doesn’t hurt at all but I’m concerned about it
VERY common. Nothing wrong with going to the doctor / dentist to get it check and give you some peace of mind, but this is most likely just your mouth healing.
I’m on hour 96. When I ran out of Grizzly I just went to bed. The next day I knew budjet was tight since wr just bought nee truck. So I decided ehh if I can kick the habit then I could save like $100 a month. So I just didn’t buy any. I’ve keep very busy and drank more water. So far, I have had zero issues which makes me a bit worried when it hots it’ll be bad, but every 24 hours is a bit closer to saying I quit. On FB I have said nothing ive made 2 post 1 saying 72 hours and the next 96 hours. Ive not said what it relates to just there as an inspiration to me.

30+ years of dipping, past 10 years have been (4 cans) per day of Cope Long-cut Straight. Rite now I’m on day 3 of a non planned cold turkey quit and it’s awful! The 1st 48 was excruciating! I was SICK! Now it’s all mental. I wanna give in… I hope I can pull through.
Today is 8 years free of chew after 25 years. Thank you KTCā¦ No shot I could have done it without you. If youāre just quitting and it seems impossible itās notā¦ just spent 3 hours in highway traffic and never even thought of a dipā¦ Never go back to day oneā¦ I quit with all of you today.

I’m 15+ days into a quit. It doesn’t sound like much, but this is my last quit. I’ve had longer runs with softer foundations. I don’t wake up feeling tired, I have better sleep, my workouts are better, I’m less of a doormat, I’m developing self-control by learning how to control my thoughts (quitting dip is no harder than missing a meal a lot of the pain associated with quitting is you telling yourself “I can’t quit, because I need it to deal with stress” no, you don’t. Your life isn’t that stressful and you can brainwash yourself into thinking you work out like a madman to deal with stress instead or some other positive habit,) my teeth are already whiter, etc. I don’t think I can betray myself for about a 3 second head rush. I won’t even enjoy myself, because I’ll be beating myself up the whole time I am dipping if I were to betray myself.

Risk is a funny thing as there are a slew of ways to define it. Are you more at risk of being killed in a car crash than you are if you dip? Sure. But think about how many times you’ve been in a car, around a car, etc.
Here’s what I can say with relative certainty.
Your ‘risk’ of developing a dip-related ailment if you don’t dip is ZERO.

Has anyone dealt with muscle spasms in different parts of the body? Iām at day 65 and most other things have subsided. Some anxiety off and on and sleep is improving. But muscle spasms in my feet/arms and occasionally other body parts have been killing me the last few weeks
Can’t say I remember dealing with them personally (other than a really sore jaw) but YES I’ve heard about quitters dealing with muscles spasms several times over the years.
I’m on day 15 right now. I’ve relapsed multiple times right around this mark but this time it genuinely feels different, like I have little to no cravings. I feel like I haven’t missed dip at all.

Well I am currently into day 6 and I am losing my mind still. Iāve been dipping for about 6 years. I am a can a day user at least. I have some fake stuff I found which actually works good. ABSOLUTELY! I had some of my WORST craves after the 100 day mark. I always tell people to go back to basics and back to what got you there. Drink lots of water, make sure you’re posting roll and if you’ve slipped a bit RE-ENGAGE with the KTC community. You are NOT alone in your struggles but they will get less and less intense and further and further between.
Also, keep in mind that you’re very possibly dealing with some seasonal triggers as well. This is the first time in a long time you’ve been through the end of winter / beginning of spring as a quitter. Don’t underestimate that.

Congrats on 4 days of freedom! Aside from headaches / fog, how you feeling? Believe it or not, you’re right on track!
Day 92, brain fog has been around since day 2 or 3. Go through most days without giving dip much thought. I gained alot of weight but now I am able to control my eating without craving a dip, so I signed up for CrossFit and am going on a diet. Never stop improving. Quitting dip is just the first step to a more enjoyable life.
Iām on day 2 for the thousandth time it seems. Quit for a year, pick it back up. Quit for 2 years, pick it back up. Hopefully this is my last day 2.

I have successfully completed 1 year and 1 month. I would say, for those new quitters, feel its possible to get rid of this shit. Definitely you can. All needed is to encourage yourself.

Hey yall! I’m on day 76 right now. The fog has always been there, but it came back stronger a couple of days ago. Is this normal? How long until the fog should disappear completely? TIA!!

Sadly… no. There’s no magic pill that makes quitting easier and there’s no magic day where everything gets better. That said, IN GENERAL, you’ll feel better on day 90 than you do on day 70. You’ll feel better on day 300 than you do on day 200. Again, in general. You’ll have a bad day now and then, but they’ll be blips on the radar and as you move AWAY from your addiction the trend is generally in a positive direction.

We are all different, for me the fog lasted about 8 months. Which was unusually long. I really suffered with that fog! I hated it! However, once it lifted for good it never came back. Now I’m almost 2 years in and I can’t even really remember what the fog felt like, I just remember it was hell. The only thing I deal with now are cravings and triggers to dip. But the memory of that long lasting fog is a great motivation to never go back to that nic bitch again, don’t want to ever go through that again. Use this time to get really motivated to continue your quit. It’s not for nothing. And will help keep you quit long term.
doug i am 149 days in,i have dizzyness and fog like crazy everyday. how would you describe the fog you had? was part of dizzyness or just like a cloudy brain feeling
Had 2 months off in 2022, then I caved. Back now, day 5 new year new me all that bs. Except, no withdrawals whatsoever (knock on wood), and this is coming from 2 cans a day to cold turkey. Don’t get it, but am enjoying it (wallet deff is aswell). Good luck everyone!

Day 46 last two days have been the only days I have really had cravings, but man they have been rough
Back to basics – lots of water, get out and have a run or a long walk. Get engaged with the community and talk through it. You’re KILLING it bro – keep it going!
At 65 days now and from my post at 46 days to now life has sucked. Cravings, muscle pain, anxiety, I have been getting my butt kicked, but still hanging in.
Day 55 today! Brain fog has come creeping back the last few days, but I can tell that the irritability has really disappeared. My poor roommate heard me vent/yell about so many things. Hopefully I’m in the homestretch!

WOWOOWOWOWOWOWOWOWOW!! One Year Over today!!! What an achievement? KTC really helped me to complete this milestone. Still I wouldnt say am completely out of cravings. Some times felt really having one. But NO. Once done is done and never attempt for even smallest of small dip. Thanks to chewy! Your motivation is just awesome when i was down on depression for first few days of my quit. My health is super now. More energitic, good and deep sleep, No bad odour from mouth… Great feeling!! Those who want to quit, please do immediately before it takes your life.

Day 3. Some cravings but no headaches yet. Iāve quit before. Sometimes couple weeks. Sometimes few months. On and off for well since 1987 I guess. I need to quit. I believe I want to quit. One of my old navy buddies has cancer now from chew. I feel like I will be next if I donāt quit. It impacts my work and home life. Staying up late. Isolation. I am successful professional but this dumb habit. Chew is now $10. I chew a can per week. They just outlawed cherry and spearmint Skoal so Iām trying again to kill it for good.
